Changed Satellite URLs??

Dear all,

today I checked the satellite (aviation weather) and got an error message - URL not found or so ...

Looking at the webpage I found some changes to the filenames as well as some interesting additional information.

Not to build any XMLs by myself and thereby confusing things that are probably in process, here my findings:

================================================== ===================================

https://aviationweather.gov/data/obs/sat/intl/

The filenames are for:

Infrared black/white :

sat_irbw_a.jpg Americas
sat_irbw_b1.jpg Atlantic
sat_irbw_c.jpg Europe/Africa
sat_irbw_d.jpg Europe/Asia
sat_irbw_e.jpg Indik/Australia
sat_irbw_f.jpg Pacific-Middle/Australia/Oceania/Japan/Hawaii
sat_irbw_g.jpg Northern Hemisphere/Europa/Asia - Polar Projection
sat_irbw_h.jpg Northern Hemisphere/Americas/North Atlantic/Europe - Polar Projection
sat_irbw_i.jpg Pacific North/Arctica - Polar Projection
sat_irbw_j.jpg Pacific South/Antarctica - Polar Projection
sat_irbw_k.jpg Indik South/Antarctica/Africa/New Zealand - Polar Projection
sat_irbw_m.jpg Pacific North - Mercator Projection

Infrared - color filenames a - m s.a. :

sat_ircol_a.jpg ....

Infrared NWS colored filenames s.a. a - m :

sat_irnws_a.jpg

Visible - filenames again a - m :

sat_vis_a.jpg

Water Vapor - filenames again s.a., a - m :

sat_wv_a.jpg

================================================== ===================================

So, what to do next, should I attempt to change the XMLs??

Do you want to include all the additional info??

Just let me know....

Best regards,

Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...

Looks great. I can't get the Chilean charts to load from the internet source (too big error).

Any chance of getting the New Zealand metservice charts added?

Aviationweather-Sat-Images

Hi Rick,

as a first shot - here are the corrected URLs and coordinates for the sat images which currently are in weatherfax.

As before, I send just the updates as .txt files

followed by "my" xml files, where all "my" data is included ....

(I think you know .... , however, just remove the .doc ..... :-) )

I will try to include all the other information as well, however, that may take a bit (learning by doing) ....

Will come back later ....

Best regards,

Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...

Dear Rick et al,

as it is ......

It was easier than thought. ...

So, attached please find the complete set of files - like in my earlier message, now including all flavors of sat-images.

I didn't do the Polar Projections yet though .... :-)

Have fun,

best regards,

Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...

Moo we would love to add NZ met back in but they changed from static url's. Are they now back to static url's? If so we can support that.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Unfortunately these urls are using "strdates" rather than static urls. It would be very nice to have these available, however it is not possible using our current plugin.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Uwe, using your weatherfaxinternetretrieval.xml and coordinatesets.xml files all of the new Aviation images worked well. Very nice addition! Thank you.

Do you want me to wait until making a Pull Request to Sean, until you can do the polars? Either way is fine.

Ahh OK. Can the plugin poll the current date and time and use that to request the latest file ?

Not yet. Suppose I supported date and time formatting in the url.

Which services besides just metservice nz would this give us?

Hi Rick, sorry, but just saw it ...

I think, the coverage with the currently available files is more than sufficient, so, the polars might be another nice (optical) addition. I will be working on them, however, for the time being I think it is better to get this out, so everybody has the data available. OK?? (as long as everything is correct - I hope - please check, my days as a professional are some decades ago .... :-) )

Best regards,

Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...

..... o.k. .....

I think - here we need a REAL expert. If Sean has some time to spare...

Sean, I cannot calibrate the file at https://aviationweather.gov/data/obs...sat_irbw_g.jpg ...

In the very north it goes circumpolar and it looks as this is either a projection not covered in the plugin or the algorithms do not support any projection that goes partly "around the world" meaning circumpolar.

Do you have any clue?

However, the currently available images cover for 99% of all sailors around the world, only those who want to do the NW passage or like to sail in the currently warm temperatures in the higher latitudes - up to 80° - may want these projected (which I doubt is possible, as mapping this to mercator would probably never work - at least not higher than 80° ..... )

Best regards, Uwe

Re: WeatherFax ...

Uwe,

I think these files which have a resolved version of
https://aviationweather.gov/data/obs...sat_irbw_g.jpg

Under Aviation Sat Images Polar (the area lat long aren't list quite right) but the coords in polar seem to work fine.

You probably have a different region name in mind etc. but it seems to work.

I think the code it's broken for this case unfortunately. It might not be too difficult to fix.
