Back to the question why GPSD wasn't working.......
Have a look in this file
Line 26 is commented out.
Remove the "#" from the beginning of the line and reboot.
With this change I got the gpsd to
work.
Trying to go back to /dev/ttyUSB0 I had this message
which must be what the OP referred to.
I had no luck following these instructions, while LennartG's instructions in post #6 worked nicely.
I was also reminded of why I don't like gpsd. My BU353 now just spitted out garbage, and I had to reset it to
NMEA mode with
