cannot get Google earth running on version 3.2 OpenCPN On Vista

I havwOPenCPN on two laptops, one Vista and new one with Win 8.0.

I had 2.5 on the Vista Machine and still do and Google Earth works Still, but on the newer 3.2 version I downloaded all works except Google Earth. I sort of expected #.2 to override and update 2.5 but it seems to be there as an extra.

Any ideas what I did wrong? THe WIn 8 machine updated version2.5 to 3.2 OK and GE WOrks on it OK

I would like to have the older vista machine running 3.2 with GE if possible as this is now a spare laptop that I will leave on the boat permanently whereas the Win8 machine is in constant use at home.

Anybody have a simple answer please?

I had/still have trouble with Google earth on our W7 laptop. When it opens, there is a dialog box with a "Learn More" link, when it freezes on opening. That explains how to fix the registry. If you don't get the dialog box, then Google "Google earth freezeup" or something of that sort. It's a procedure for eliminating some startup files that cause the freezeup.

THanks BUT I tried and no go. THe Google Earth option doesn't even show as being present to 'enable under tools and plug ins, whereas the others like logbook and Dashboard do.

The plugin should work just fine with OpenCPN 3.2
I'm assuming you have the current version you recently downloaded from PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage , not some old release that was actual when 2.5 was released copied to the 3.2 installation. I also hope you didn't change the filename so it is gecomapi_win32_pi16_v010_pi.dll
Could I have a look at your logfile (Read down bellow on Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage if you don't know how to find it yet)?

AT first I didn't download Google earth plug in because IT was already there on the older version 2.5 but I have tried downloading it again today and still nothing shows on openCPN to launch google earth or 'enable' it in the tools/plug-ins menu. I have found the log filebut how can I show it to you? I JUst tried printing it via notepad and it said 78 pages so I cancelled it.

Yep, that's exactly the part we needed.
It tells us that OpenCPN does not find the GE plugin at all.
Are you really sure that a file called gecomapi_win32_pi16_v010_pi.dll exists in C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\plugins?

Ge something.exe was there I tried to open it just now and it says it cannot because something is missing, try another install..

I'm ahead of you, I tried and faile 6 times then opened a GE installer from my 'downloads folder' and it downloaded GE plug in but still does not work. I hate to be beaten but I Have had one stroke already and would like to avoid another just for this, I can use 2.5 still on the old laptop or use my newer Win8 laptop where it does work on 3.2.

Is it perhaps because I still have Opencpn 2.5 loaded and which works with GE? I only really wanted 3.2 for the extended light sector display feature which is easier to use

There are 2 different things: 1) Google Earth 2) Google Earth plugin for OpenCPN

There is an installer for Google Earth, which you must run to install it on your machine.

There is no installer for the GE plugin, it is one file you have to download from the location I gave you in the previous post and manually copy into OpenCPN's plugin folder.

DUH< I TOLD YOU I AM DUMB, THe installer must date back to me putting GE on.

THis laptop had problems and was wiped an re-loaded by a local geek service , losing most of my data and programs in the process, I have done well to get it up to being partially useable as a 'boat only' laptop, this really is icing on the cake of getting something where nothing previously existed after the reload.

Thanks for your help, I will try the file download again if it will work this time....

One last try and it worked.! I think I will buy a lottery ticket tomorrow.

I suspect my problem were partly caused by my vista reload being a 'worksop special and MS kept trying to tell me it is unlicensed ( it is) however I tried again the download via a mirror site and t worked this time..

What a fantastic resource this forum is, and open CPN a fantastic program too. the geeks I paid mucho monies to were no help really and I ended up buying A new laptop anyway as a result with Win 8 which I don't like much, but I am finally getting used to it more now, Almost a year lter
