OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

5 December, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The OpenCPN Development Team is proud to announce the release of OpenCPN Version 5.6.0.
OpenCPN Version 5.6.0 is available for immediate download.

This version is a feature upgrade and maintenance release of OpenCPN.

OpenCPN is a cross platform electronic navigation system (ECS) supporting a variety of cartography standards and hardware interface protocols. Versions are available for linux, Windows, Raspberry Pi, and MacOS computer architectures.

Some features of OpenCPN include:
- Quilted Raster(RNC) and Vector(ENC) digital chart display.
- Support for MBTiles photo and geographical chart overlays.
- Industry standard GPS receiver interfacing, with "moving map" on-screen vessel tracking.
- AIS receiver interfacing with configurable target safety monitoring.
- Integrated Route, Track, and Waypoint database, with industry standard Import/Export capabilities.
- Tide and Current prediction, with on-screen overlay of predicted data.
- Broad International Language support.
- PlugIn architecture allowing on-going third-party functional enhancements.

OpenCPN is released under the GPLV2 license. The executable program and its source code are available for immediate, free, and unlimited download from github.com.

As a successor to OpenCPN Version 5.2.4, OpenCPN Version 5.6.0 contains new features and enhanced functions.
Among them are:

- Incorporate extensive user feedback to resolve various UI flaws and functional errors.

- Support extended display resolutions and modes, including Dark Mode on supported platforms.

- Extend Plugin system program interface, enabling new new classes of Plugins with enhanced features.

- Increased performance in all areas, particularly when using OpenGL graphics acceleration.

- Improved reliability over all supported platforms.

We hope you enjoy the new features of OpenCPN Version 5.6.0, and look forward to your continued feedback.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Still not learned how to compile software for macOS? There are 25 symbolic links for libraries in the frameworks folder of the macOS version. A bad hack.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Installed O 5.6 on Ubuntu 20.04.03 standard install on 2 computers PPA on standard ubuntu software updater.

1st computer no oeSENC charts and don't see any problems.

2nd computer has official charts from the O shop.
O starts with warning twice about old PI 4.0 and that I should proceed to update master cat.
Everything seems to work fine until I click on the plug in tab, at which point the tab headers all disappear and the mouse turns into a continuous circle of death. No windows respond to red x close and killall doesn't work in shutting O down.

At this point the plugins can be scrolled through and if I check the enable box of some of the plugins O crashes. (WMM and DRAW and GPS odometer each will achieve this individually)
Also if I click update master cat, master cat says it has updated but I can not shut this little window either.

Starting in plugin safe mode no different.

Only CM93 charts load.
Last nights log attached renamed.

cheers Dave

Update
"sudo apt install libusb-0.1-4"
Then "sudo apt autoremove" as resulting suggestion from above action.

Looks to be working now.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Installed over 5.2.4. Crashed on first startup, restarted in safe mode, all ok, but when I enabled the oeSenc plugin it crashed. No remedy found,

Jim

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.0 Released

Installed on MacOS 11.5. on a M1 MacBook. Works well. oeSenc does work, will test other plugins in the coming days.

Many thanks to Dave and the entire development team. Great job.

Jim..

please update the plug-in from within OpenCPN using the managed plug-in interface from Options|Plug-ins --> update catalog.
Plug-ins with updates will be marked with a green arrow-up.
Select and update.

Bram

It was probably an error in my settings. Now it works again.

Sorry for my message.

Alert sounds outdated

The alert sounds under User Interface are linked to RC version 5.5.920.

Thanks, Hubert, that did indeed solve the problem.

Now to start using it!

And as always, thanks for all of your efforts in OCPN!
