Open CPN GPS

My GPS dongle which is a G-Star IV is not working. It has worked previously, and the red light is flashing, which I understand shows that it is receiving a signal, but the GPS indicator on the RH top corner of the Open CPN page is showing red. I think this means that it is not receiving the GPS signal.

Any help would be much appreciated.
I have copied the log and config file below as suggested.

C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.log
C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini

Nothing attached...

When attaching a file make sure that you actually uploading it. The corresponding button gets hidden on the right quite often.

You might need to change the name of the file extensions in order to overcome forum restrictions for the size of uploadable files.

Re: Open CPN GPS

I am assuming this is on Windows?

Open Device manager (press the windows key and start typing "device manager" and it will find it)
Look in Device manager for your GPS, and find what COM port it is assigned to.
In OpenCPN settings->connections, set the COM port to what was shown in device manager.

Windows will sometimes re-number the COM ports, and this is the result.

yes, sure, be careful if you connect the GPS in a USB Hub instead of a USB computer plug because uses to happens what wholybee says.

if I remember there was an article some years ago to avoid such behavior with USB devices, it was some registry strings, you must google it in the web if still alive.

Re: Open CPN GPS

You could try this >
Unplug the gps & plug it in again, you should hear a bingbingbing then a bing, bingbingbing as it deconnects then connects again if it is working .
Then go into opencpn options connections, there should be a serial connection there from before if it was working.
click the dataport arrow & see what's there, the gps might have changed port for some reason. Your GPS should be on that list, maybe as a serial device, leave the baud rate the same & select what looks like the gps>

(no need to go into device manager, opencpn should update the list of devices)

Then up at the top of the connections window click "shoe nmeadebug window"
Then click apply.
If it connects you should see messages in a new debug window.
If it doesn't, we'll try something else...

Re: Open CPN GPS

Without going via device manager
Right click on Windows Icon, select run and cmd. In the command prompt: chgport and enter. Or with the replaced command: change port /QUERY

You will see a list of com ports
