I downloaded Open CPN for Mac but can’t open it. Any suggestions?

See this:

Are the developers going to at some point sign the app?

Re: Open CPN for Macs

from https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...ation:mac_os_x

Quote:
Mac OS X

Note: You must install OpenCPN into your Applications folder where it belongs. The installers of the plugins of course expect it to be there.

OpenCPN is distributed as a Mac ".dmg" file

  1. Download the .dmg file.
  2. Open the dmg file by double-clicking on it - this will mount the dmg as a virtual device and create a mount on your desktop.
  3. Drag the OpenCPN.app icon to the Applications icon in the installer window. This may require the administrator password.
  4. Unmount the dmg by right-clicking on the desktop icon and selecting “Eject”
  • You can have a look at this tutorial How to Install and Remove Apps for general instructions on installing Mac OS X applications.
  • If you have a message that installations are only accepted for programs from qualified developers, navigate to Applications in Finder, Control-click OpenCPN.app, select Open from the context menu and confirm that you want to start it in the displayed dialog.
  • To save a previously installed version rename the app in the Applications directory before installing the new version.
  • If OpenCPN.app is replaced, the installed plugins will not be there anymore and have to be re-installed on the new OpenCPN.app. The userdata of the plugins will still be there.
Also for MacOS Mojave see CF thread http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ve-228973.html
For MacOS Catalina there are some issues, but look at this CF post http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post3054084

Plugin Installation

  1. Download the installation package (*.pkg)
  2. Make sure that the OpenCPN application is not renamed. The plugin will only install on OpenCPN.app
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation. In case your security settings are tight, which is the default on modern macOS versions, Control-Click on the file, select Open from the context menu and confirm your intention to open the installer.
  4. Follow the instructions provided by the installer
  5. In case your security settings are tight and the OS refuses to start the installer, control-click it, select Open from the context menu and confirm your intention to install the plugin in the subsequent dialog.

Why should OpenCPN subsidize Apple?

For the people that are unaware... to sign with apple requires payment to apple for a developer certificate ($99). This is so apple can verify that the developer is not some unknown entity that shall install malware on the phone (at least that was the original justification).

Now... apple does wave the fee for certain developers (non profit) that distribute free apps. ( https://developer.apple.com/support/...ip-fee-waiver/ )

I agree that it would be nice for a developer to sign the app, so that a third party does not distribute software that contains more then what was originally intended..

Re: Open CPN for Macs

The $99 lets you create a signing certificate that I believe will last for 5 years. So it's only $20 per year.

Signing apps is an important security measure to stop malware and viruses from being added to and distributed with software. IMO, more important than users installing AV software. Not only Apple, but Microsoft and Android require it for those OS's as well. There really is no valid excuse for not doing it.

It is going to get harder and harder to install software that hasn't been signed. I no longer use MacOS, but my understanding is that with the most current versions you can no longer click through it, but need to change hidden preferences via terminal. Basically making it impossible for average users to install. Windows isn't far behind.

In most cases, if you need to right-click a link or tab on your iPad, simply tap and hold the screen for a few seconds until a menu of options appears.

Re: Open CPN for Macs

After it downloads, you then get a blank page and when you click on preview you get the contract details of the open cpn. There is nothing to hold down to open.

Right.. I may have misunderstood.. OPenCPN shall NOT work in the format they have it in for an ipad.

It will work for a notebook. Someone has a version that works on android...

But Not on iPad.

Hope this helps

Re: Open CPN for Macs

I am experiencing some problems trying to run plugins like Plots and AIS Radar. Does anyone had similar problems?

Which problems? Please detail a bit more.

Versions of macOS, OpenCPN, and of the plug-ins in question?

Re: Open CPN for Macs

After installing Plots, via plugin section in Preferences, it doesn’t show up in the tools menu. AIS Radar behave the same.

I have installed several other plugins without problems.

I’ve tried to erase those plugins from /Library and installed again, but without success.

Open CPN version 5.5.2

Plots plugin version 2.3.13.0

AIS Radar plugin version 1.4.11.5

Mac OS Version 14.5
