how on earth do I start opencpn on boot Rpi 5

I can't believe I haven't found the answer to this yet. I am using V5.8.4-2 on a new Rpi 5 with a flatpak install. I am trying to get opencpn to start on boot. I can run it from the command line with this:

/usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=aarch64 --command=opencpn.sh org.opencpn.OpenCPN

However trying this from cron with @reboot doesn't work. I have tried creating a simple script with the same command and running it from cron and rc.local.
Is there an faq I have missed?

The way you try to do it has no chance of working as you need to start it in the desktop session of your user.
You don't say what desktop environment you are using, but the usual way to do it is to simply place a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart which in this case looks something like this:

$ cat ~/.config/autostart/OpenCPN.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=flatpak run org.opencpn.OpenCPN
