Re: Currently using OpenCPN, Windows 10 & Bluetooth or USB GPS?

Hakan, this is a great, simple approach using the phones hotspot with an Opencpn UDP output! I hadn't thought of that and I have the old android phone now. I think I'm going to add this approach to the Supplimentary manual.

- Start the phone's hotspot. (Set it to paid connection to avoid massive downloads if you've a SIM card installed. (Not necessary))
- Connect a power cable to the phone and hang it high.

- Connect the OCPN PC/tablet(s) to the hotspot wifi network.
- In OCPN make a network UDP input connection to port 10110 and you're done.

PS1: In the case the PC is drowned or else failure the phone's OCPN is still working.
PS2: The phone can act as power cheap anchor watch instead of the PC.
PS3: Get a cheap GNSS puck/mouse for more redundancy. (Every electronic device in a boat may soon or later fail.)

Good description Hakan. Perfect. Thanks

Re: Currently using OpenCPN, Windows 10 & Bluetooth or USB GPS?

Android phone GPS to Laptop via wifi

Not having much luck getting this to work.

Android phone and Windows 11 laptop

Phone is set up with opencpn and correct position is indicated on chart

NMEA debug window on the phone shows messages including position.

Laptop is connected to phone hotspot but nothing indicated on debug

Host port 10110 on phone and laptop. IP on phone 168.0.0.2 on phone & 168.0.0.3 on laptop.

Phone set to output & laptop to input

Had to untick control checksum on phone to get output.

Would really like to get this to work as in addition to phones we have a redport optimizer/sat phone which is powered all the time and connected to external antenna

Any help much appreciated.

Apologies in advance for my ignorance - I am new to this.

Re: Currently using OpenCPN, Windows 10 & Bluetooth or USB GPS?

168.0.0.2 is a very strange IP address on the hot spot?
I should have expected something like 192.168.0.xx
"localhost" above would be 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 (output UDP can use: 192.168.0.255 on some system)

Re: Currently using OpenCPN, Windows 10 & Bluetooth or USB GPS?

168.0.0.2 is odd, but on most phones when in hotspot mode you don't get to choose the IP address, and the phone sometimes picks weird ones.

As for why it isn't working. Depending on the phone, it might not ever work. Hotspot mode creates a network, and creates a route from connected devices to the Internet. You might not be able to pass traffic to/from the phone to devices on the network. I've had it both work and not work on different devices. So, to start with, make sure the phone and laptop can ping each other. That needs to work before you play with OpenCPN.

If you have or can test with wifi router instead of using the phone as a hotspot, that might be helpful. You might find that the phone and laptop can ping each other with the wifi router, but not with the phone in hotspot mode.

You also might need to open port 10110 (or whatever you choose) in the Defender firewall. Depending on your configuration, Windows might ask with a popup saying it blocked traffic, do you want to allow it?, or it might just silently block it. Or, you might have clicked through and not clicked yes.

Re: Currently using OpenCPN, Windows 10 & Bluetooth or USB GPS?

Thanks for the info much appreciated.
Tried with firewall off - windows did ask and I allowed but also entirely disabled for testing.
We use hotspot for all our data on the laptops so the network is working ok.
I did try through our wifi router without success. Unfortunately going to ne tied up next couple of weeks so I'll pick things up then and clarify addresses. I had no luck using the redport optimiser which is also a router but that was a bit earlier in the learning curve so will revist and report back.
Cheers
