If I'm in the sealed pilot house and I hear the mob knocking and I have an additional life raft for everyone to get in then we all raft it together. If no life raft available then I can be of no help to him and would only be endangering the crew by opening the companionway and exposing them to very cold water earlier than necessary.

Even here in the benign Salish Sea, even in the summertime, 6 feet down the water is about 42ºF due to the enormous quantities of smelting water from the high mountains brought into BC coastal waters from the many rivers debouching there.

It is said - though I haven't verified it personally - that survival time for a man of "normal" BMI and "normally" fit is about 40 minutes, and that muscular control is lost after about ten minutes. That, of course, was the raison d'etre of the Mustang "floater suit" developed, IIRC, by the University of British Columbia.

I can tell you that many, many years ago when I was young a fit, and a member of a young and fit racing crew, I went over the side near the town of Squamish where the Cheakamus River enters Howe Sound. MAN!!! I'm sure I musta resembled the Roadrunner when I came to the surface :-)!

So I'm quite prepared to accept the "40 minutes" contention.

I am also prepared to assert without the slightest blush that a single man CANNOT get a MOB back aboard even a puny 30-footer all by his lonesome! Either one or two more men, or SERIOUS mechanical aid, is required. And don't ask me how I know THAT :-)!

Justa coupla more thoughts for the Wizard to cogitate upon.

I am also prepared to contend that if the Wizard manages to heel any boat he is likely to be in to, say, 40º, the water on the cockpit sole won't be all seawater :-)!

What do you mean when you say all the water on the cockpit sole won't be seawater? Remember I'm a novice.

Lots of important things to consider here in terms of saving his ass.
You've got to be joking. I do my best to save anyone's ass. Even if I don't like them.

If the MOB is still on the boat then they are not an MOB.
And how will you know that it is not an orca knocking that - having had entree - is checking what is for mains.
You know that there is a reason wise cruisers don't use grey antifouling.

Re: Survival challenge

And also if you are in the sealed pilothouse how will you hear tapping on the hull or be able to tap back?

I believe that’s a bladder joke

Having been heeled over farther than I have ever desired I can actually believe it but in my case every thing was pretty clamped shut

A man knocking would have a distinct pattern. Why don't wise cruisers use grey antifouling?

Do not underestimate the intelligence of the Orca - they are smarter than dolphins.
The US military trained dolphins as minehunters in Vietnam, they taught Orcas morse code. That information is still classified - I received my copy from Mar a Lago just the other day.
They will know what to tap on your hull.

If you use grey they will think your boat is grey whale and that you are a calf, they will snatch you off the deck - when your boat is upright - just like that.
Lots of sailors lost that way every year.

Google grey whale orca california.

WAIT! ...what anchor does he have and is he carrying a converted flare gun as a weapon?

You know...I blame the development of GPS and the internet to all these basement dwelling shooting stars. I must admit, there is an entertainment value, small as it may be.

Couldn’t have typed it better Celestialsailor.

Back to the original thread question from the Mattdewizard.

I might have missed something!

What part of the world is this happening in?
