[QUOTE=goboatingnow;3692868]
Just as an aside OP the Rose Noelle floated completely upturned for 119 days before breaking up on a beach. Her crew lived (vey uncomfortably) in a small cubby that had previously (ie prior to capsize) been an aspect of the bilge. OK she wasn't an aluminium mono with a swing keel, but perhaps you could think again.

But in the hypothetical scenario postulated perhaps it's not such a good idea to have a very heavy piece of metal on a pivot that could come crashing down from above? Actually it's always struck me as somewhat counter intuitive having a great big hole in the hull of your boat in any event. There are alternatives to give super reduced draft and keep the integrity of the hull; to whit the twin keel.

Atom Voyages and a number of others have postulated ideas to make the boat itself a liferaft. Well worth some research.

And I will just chuck this grubby little question in to the Couch Cruiser's Forum.
Does one give up Captaincy on a capsize or in fact any catastrophic event?

Re: Survival challenge

I was involved with the RNLI who design one of the best heavy weather rescue boats in the world and these are tested every winter

There design philosophy is a sealed pilot house but the overall focus is on re-righting the boat.

That would be my preference , getting the boat back upright rather then a focus on living inverted

No. Captaincy remains in place till rescue. However, of my faculties are impaired I will choose another captain.

Let's say southern ocean. Very rough seas.

Yes, very cold, let's say low 40's. From my limited knowledge an immersion suit may only give 24 hours of survival time.

They will know what to tap on your hull.

If you use grey they will think your boat is grey whale and that you are a calf, they will snatch you off the deck - when your boat is upright - just like that.
Lots of sailors lost that way every year.

Google grey whale orca california.
How prudent of you relaying classified information.

Lee shores and no steerage. I think that would be a productive challenge thread.

Mattdewizard Strikes Again!

I think Mattdewizard got out of bed on the west coast.

I think it’s around 11:00 am there.

Entertainment on the cruiser forums! Who would have thought!

No! Make it warmer water, full of Oceanic Whitetip Sharks. It's the downside of escaping the sinking, capsized hull.

Re: Survival challenge

Paranoid much?
The chances of this scenario happening in real life is 1 in 100000 and if it happens you won't even remember what the answer was because you'll be terrified and helpless.
Don't waste your time with what if.
Go sail in real World.
