Recomendations for a good compact ink jet printer

I'm looking to get a printer on board to make life easier when checking in to various ports where I need to print out documents. Most of the printers I have seen are quite large and I'd rather not take up that much space. Any recommendations? Something that could be powered off of USB-C and have bluetooth or wifi would be ideal. I don't need to print photos or anything fancy, just plain old b&w documents.

Re: Recomendations for a good compact ink jet printer

I had Canon mini printers on board twice.. They were terrible. the printing heads would go bad and were very expensive. Like half the cost of a printer. The mini printer was expensive in the first place.
I'm not sure what to tell you, but I would probably see if there is a mini laser printer so you dont have to deal with ink and it's problems drying out etc for a minimal use printer.
Hopefully someone has more up to date info than me.

I've been using a Brother printer at home, it cost $60 new and has worked for 4 years or so now. The previous one lasted about 4 years. Ink is readily available for $1-2.

I see they have smaller ones too now.

You may want to take a look at the PocketJet 6/7 printers. They are thermal, and require thermal paper, but do not use other supplies. They are small, reliable, and use little power. Thermal paper has improved over the past few decades and is available in various forms, some waterproof, some archival, etc.

Right, I think the best ink jet printer is a laser printer. Ink jets just never work when you need them to. And there are pretty compact black and white laser printers available.

Re: Recomendations for a good compact ink jet printer

I bought the Cannon IP110 which has done periodic printing just fine for me with three caveats being

1) There's no getting around you're paying a premium for ink at that size class, and when it's all said and done if you have access to a shore-based printer for anything close to a reasonable per page price it's probably better in all ways to use that even if you have a portable printer onboard.

2) Being diligent with storage environment is important for printers and all "standard" electronics which for me means I keep it in a plastic bin that has a foam gasket around it (not waterproof like a pelican case, just highly water resistant container like some office supply stores sell) and kept in a protected area of my boat. I do my very best to avoid rough handling and let it fully go through its turn on/turn off procedure with the power button as opposed just turning off my inverter or unplugging it.

3) Using it periodically (especially to avoid ink at the printer head drying up). For use on a boat even though I personally have the above mentioned Canon, I think there is a lot to be said for an ink jet on a boat having the entire clog-prone assembly as one disposable piece as opposed to a separate expensive printer head...

A vote for the out of production HP 1000 if you can find one; they are reliable, take up very little space, and cost about as much as replacing the ink cartridges. If you need scanning and wireless printing, step up to the HP Deskjet series.

Sunny Sky really covers it on care once you get one. Our HP 1000 has been printing out charts ever since 2012.

Re: Recomendations for a good compact ink jet printer

This is the best printer that we have had on board. Not cheap, but compact, portable & fast printing.

Lol, we just terminated a lengthy thread on this.

https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...d.php?t=262436

Good thoughts and recommendations in there for both types, Laser and Inkjet.
