Where does the young cruiser roam?
Hi,
first of all: No offense to folks at any age indented!
I just like to hang out with folks from the same generation from time to time. I found a couple of areas where literally everybody is the age of my parents or even grandparents, now I'm wondering if there's also the opposite? So, do you per chance now any areas with plenty of young sailors (like above 20 and below 40)?
Thanks, Andi

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam
We met young cruisers off the beaten path...in Ecuador. The Galapagos Islands were a big draw, as well as other South American countries. Some were jumping off to the South Pacific.

And increasingly less common.
Look places where parasailing, kitesurfing, climbing and other gramming-friendly activities are available.

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
It's not a young person's thing, unfortunately.
I've been the youngest guy at the marina/harbor every year for the past 25 years.

In the cruiser world (as opposed to the living cheap on a boat world) the people in their 50s are kids.
So, I don't know the answer to your question, but don't believe it's along the East Coast US.

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
Young people wealthy enough to cruise any length of time, much less as a lifestyle, are going to be global travelers, certainly not pottering around near where they grew up.
Sure those who need (or choose) to earn an income will maybe (rarely) vacation charter or weekend / day sail etc, but that's not the OP topic.

I'm wondering if this might change. I was about to start cruising on a 6 month work at home / 6 month cruising schedule but I guess I'll not do that any time soon. The "age gap" is only one reason for that. I guess more young folks will start as flexible work models and satellite internet improves.
So, I'll probably wait till the baby boomer generation is too old to sail and grab a cruising vessel on the cheap then.
Up until then my best guess so far is to roam the baltic some more, it's surprisingly affordable compared to let's say panama and has some other perks like excellent cellular data (internet), excellent supply of spares / postal service without tax related delays, safety, ...
Or maybe atlantic spain / portugual, supposedly very nice.

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
Pacific Mexico is starting to attract a younger set. I know of a handful of under 40s who have headed down the west coast...

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
In 2012 I came across 2 boats in Panama.. everyone late twenties to early thirties..
One boat was a smart Scandanavian boat, pretty new crewed by Swedish army guys working their way round the world between tours.. they'd recently finished a tour in Afghanistan and were ready to head on to the next leg across the Pacific..
The other was an old 36ft steel boat owned by a couple of Norwegian guys and their crew, one French and two Danes.. the goal was to follow Hyerdhals route once in the Pacific then continue on round back to Norway..
Oh.. and there was Laura Dekker and her new boyfriend on their way to NZ..
That was just in Shelter Bay and the other side.. couple of other boats on the hook with young ones aboard but did not get to know them bar a wave to each other heading to and back from the crappy landing that served the anchorage.
They're out there on the highways, not so much on the back roads used by locals.

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
Unfortunately, unless you are a great saver ( or rich) , it usually takes a while to accumulate enough funds to cruise full time.

Re: Where does the young cruiser roam?
They're already dirt cheap if you know how, willing to put in the time and travel a bit. Even "free"!
But in some cases, nothing's more expensive. . .
