Two come to mind:

There are two kinds of sailors, those that have been seasick, and those that will become seasick.

If you can't take a joke, you shouldn't have bought a boat.....

Mackerel skies and mares tails make tall ships carry small sails...

The only way to get a good crew is to marry one..

A fresh turn to windward, with the water chuckling in the scuppers...

I once heard that the two most useless things on a sailboat were a naval officer and an umbrella

Two kinds of sailors. Those that have run aground, and those that lie about it.

Other common ones:

The wind always blows from the bow.

He who scorns the calm has forgotten the storm.

Mackerel skies and mare's tails mean soon tall ships will wear short sails.

And if you are a serious ocean racer:

Confusion to the French!

Jim, My most favorite throughout my sailing career are:

If Ocean Racers had good memories, they wouldn't.

Sailing is fun,....Sailing is fun,.... Sailing is fun. I'm just not sure how much more of this fun I can stand. (spoken from the foredeck, doing sail-changes in a whole gale)

WHAT the F..K WAS That?? (response to a loud BANG)

Re: Favorite cruising related sayings

When you think of shaking a reef out wait 20 minutes.
Never take your boat where your brain has never been.
You can never have to much fuel aboard unless you are on fire.
If it takes full power to get moving check that you have pulled the anchor up.
Never pass up an opportunity to eat, to sleep or to use the heads
Sailboat cruising is an opportunity to do boat maintenance in new places, try out new marine suppliers and to meet new people who are all too ready to take advantage of people far from home.
You start your sailing career with two buckets with leaks in them, one is empty, the other is full of luck. The idea is to fill the empty bucket with experience before your luck runs out.
When afloat always make sure that there is at least one other person on board who can pick you up if you fall overboard.

I think that saying is perpetrated by the wanna-bees and adventurers who figure they should "try boating" at some point in their lives. The "Been There, Done That" crowd.

Real boaters will always feel some sadness when selling a boat they owned, loved and poured sweat equity into.
Relieved certainly, and forever sad, though it gets better with time.

One stolen:
"Here in the land of sun and fun, we never flush for number one!"

And two, we coined ourselves:
"Never travel in the ICW at weekends or public holidays."

"If you're docked in a port-side slip, do check you have removed the starboard bow line before leaving."
