Many reasons, to state a few:

The boat pounds against the waves, .

Spray carries further and everyone gets wetted,

It is causes enhanced windchill due to additive effective of windage, .

One has to tack back and forth because one can't sail directly into the wind, .

Gentlemen DO NOT RACE, because racing involves a lot of commands [yelling, barking orders] and fast actions which makes being on-board a comparatively unpleasant experience. [All based on the crazy notion that somehow one can make an inherently, not mechanically powered, slow boat that can't follow a direct route, get quickly around a circular course; meaning that one ends up back where they started, i.e., lacks purpose, kind of like playing golf.]. And at the conclusion of the "race" there is perceived to be some accomplishment that one can have bragging rights or honor associated therewith but which has zero lasting achievement

Everything on your boat is broken. You just don't know it yet.

I don’t remember who has this as a signature line, but I often quote it: “When you own a boat, you’re never out of work”.

Keep the water on the outside and the people on the inside.

Treat the toerail like the edge of a 500 foot cliff.

Hi all
I'm surprised that the "BOAT = Bring Out Another Thousand" has not been mentioned yet (or did I miss it!).

The two happiest days of a boat owners life. The day they buy the boat, and the day they sell the boat.

I never liked that one. Yes, I've been relieved when a boat sold. But that was after I'd already bought a new one. Relieved is a lot different than "happy."

I think that saying is perpetrated by the wanna-bees and adventurers who figure they should "try boating" at some point in their lives. The "Been There, Done That" crowd.

Real boaters will always feel some sadness when selling a boat they owned, loved and poured sweat equity into.
