Re: Boat naming ideas

I feel ya. I only had two girls and one wife, so mine was easy. Daughters Molly and Libby, and wife, Kathy, inspired me to come up with MOLIKA, using the first two letters of each name. I tell people it's Polynesian for 'beautiful maiden'. Just a thought. Good luck!

I teach marine band radio. So I’d recommend:
Not too long
Single word
Not to complicated that you are often asked to spell it out

Visit https://www.itu.int/mmsapp/ShipStation/list
Enter you proposed boat name and you will see how many boats share that name.
My boat is Ambitious Alice, it is the only one registered, although it does break two of my own rules!

The only criteria for a vessel name is that the Coast Guard approves it and fits it on the boat. There's too much nonsense about it being a common name, a short name, an easy name, or whatever. If the USCG approves it, you're gold.

Re: Boat naming ideas

It is my belief boats, like brands, should be memorably named, and reflect something positive about their owners. The boat's name should also beg a question or two in new ports to help break the ice. Ideally it should be no more than two syllables and definitely not some naff mnemonic made up of your and your pet’s names. Why not a mnemonic or anagram ? Because every salt will know it's a mnemonic or anagram and essentially meaningless. What about puns? Well, they generally only work in your native language, and are of course 'the lowest form of wit'.

Now, take a moment and imagine you're in a force 9 gale calling the coast guard for help. Complex, romantic names take a long time to spell out phonetically, and are easily misunderstood over a radio in foul weather. Our boat's name is 5 letters (technically 4 letters with one repeated), one word, 2.5 syllables.

One last thought, with three children, I'd set them the task of naming the boat (with some ground rules like those above). Assuming they're old enough, they should agree on the name and provide at least two alternatives. (After all, you're paying the bills.)
