Re: Boat naming ideas

Many have mentioned this. Don't make the name too complicated. Going thru the many drawbridges on the ICW in S Florida we were listening to a boat on the radio as it requested a raise. The name was so confusing to the bridge operators they were asking for a spelling each time. This quickly gets old.

Re: Boat naming ideas

whatever you do...don't name it after your wife, ex-wives, past girlfriend(s)...sister...mother...etc
strictly non-family names will keep you out of hot water..

One of those "Sounded better on paper...." ideas. Until the first time you answer "Oh, we named the boat after our 3 kids". Then you realize it sounds worse when you try to explain.

Re: Boat naming ideas

I don't like to tell anyone what to name their boat. That's a personal thing.

But I am usually willing to chime in when we're talking about what not to use.

Most of the good "don'ts" have been covered. The only caution I have left is this: Pretend to hold a mic and slowly say "Mayday Mayday Mayday. This is [insert name here.]"

Now imagine hearing that. If you couldn't take it seriously, chose another name.

Re: Boat naming ideas

Thank you all so much for such great suggestions. Actually the initials of my avatar are my kid's initials, i wouldn't want to spell them out as it'll be too long, but wanted something unique to resemble them!

Shrew we have not met these three "treasures", maybe there is no need for an explanation when they pull into the marina! Who doesn't love a show with pigs sailing boats.
Cheers

How about EXTREME? it includes all of you, is much faster to say in the radio phonetic alphabet.

Re: Boat naming ideas

Many years ago I got my extra Ham License, but chose to keep my advanced call sign as it was so easy to understand over the air.

Some letters of the alphabet just lend themselves to easy pronunciation and understanding, especially used in combination with other letters, keeping in mind that it may become necessary to spell the name phonetically....ie,....Besty...Bravo, Echo, Sierra, tango, yankee..

The trick then is find a word that is easy on the ear of virtually anyone. Notice I said "word" and not "words"
Also keeping in mind that person on the other end may not be an English speaker and complicated words or themes will most likely be misunderstood.

The English language can be a complicated tongue twister for many. ie, the word cat would be more simply understood when spelled as "kat"....ie, a hard "c". For a foreigner the word "cat" could be mistaken for "sat"....ie, a soft "c"

While trying to be cutsy and come up with wildly bizarre names may earn you brownie points with family members, that view point is unlikely to be shared by others.

Re: Boat naming ideas

I would suggest not to form a name with your kids’ initials but rather work with them to come up with a unique name that they will be proud of in the future, something funny or silly - kids are very creative and you will be surprised at what they can come up with.

Of course make sure you conform to the earlier suggestions that people gave, including saying it aloud and hearing yourself.

Re: Boat naming ideas

IMHO, boat names should be feminine, 3 syllables (easier to h understand over vhf), and relevant to owner. Sounds to me like you should name it after your daughter.
