I upgraded my anchor on SV Satire

Hi All,

The sailing vessel Satire has upgraded her anchor from a 50 kg rock (as in basalt) to a 20 kg CQR.

Wow what an upgrade. I am now able to anchor with less scope and still have holding over that rock. Also, because the CQR has a shank I no longer have to worry about scraping the galvanizing off the chain where it goes through the hole in the rock.

The CQR is so much better than the rock it is just amazing. I did consider going to a heaver rock but the CQR is so much better it just did not make sense.

I am thinking of an upgrade of my rigging. I am really happy with the hemp line I currently use so going to polyester does not appear to be useful or cost effective. What do you think?

Ha ha! Lovely post. I'd stick with hemp, or better yet switch to manila. Since it shrinks when wet it'll self-tighten the rigging during squalls, stiffening the rig and de-powering the boat.

Your problem is that you were using the rock wrong ... you're supposed to epoxy a ring bolt into the hole to attach the chain, not run the chain directly through the hole. Basalt also isn't a good choice of rock, you should have upgraded to granite, it has a far rougher surface, and grips the sea-floor better, and don't use cheap Jurassic granite from China, get the good stuff from the Canadian Shield ... no wonder you were dragging.

But seriously, I think you picked the wrong anchor for your Satire You do know that in Steve's latest roundup the venerable CQR bested the Rocna, Bruce, and Delta in overall capability and pretty much tied the Manson Supreme if you discount the (apparently non-predictive of holding power) tip weight category?

I'm sure that you would have seen as great an improvement if you had used a gun barrel instead of the rock, and those come conveniently bored with a hole down the center for attachment of the rode. The really big gun barrels work best, and can be used as a spinnaker pole when you are not using them as anchors.

The new generation Viking anchor with its combination of rock and wood is vastly superior to rock alone.

Damn, I wish I knew about the Viking upgrade before buying that new fangled anchor. I like to stay with the tried and true. Evolution not revolution.
