Although I am experienced in powerboats and have some sailing experience, I'd not had any formal
training before so thought i'd better do some before I change from
power to sail next year. The limited sailing exp' I had was mainly by watching others do it and picking it up myself so it was great to spend a couple of days with an instructor to learn how to do it 'properly'!
Spent a day and a half last week on a Jeannau 36 with two others, one doing a crew course and the other finishing off his RYA coastal
skipper. The last day was posponed until today due to bad
weather in
Gibraltar and spent the whole day with just myself and the instructor on a
Bavaria 37, this time with an in
mast furling sail so I got to use the two main types of sail which was very usefull.
Algeciras bay next to
Gibraltar is ideal for this kind of
training and we got some decent
wind today, it was a thrill to be powering along with the toe rail dipping in and out of the water!
If anyone needs any training in Southern
Spain or Gibraltar itself, I'd just like to recommend Hurcules Sailing. Chris, is the owner/instructor and him and his partner, Mandy, were very friendly, helpfull and flexable.
Can't wait to get going properly next year now, roll on 2011!
