Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

My quest to outfit my 43’ sailboat with effective additional on deck gas and diesel has been a frustrating one. My goal is to have yellow Gerry cans for diesel and red for gas. A total of 4 diesel cans, 2 gas and 2 water. Water I have accomplished by purchasing 5 gallon scepter potable water jugs. They are perfect. However, gas and diesel have proven impossible... because of the EPA laws gas and diesel cans now need crappy spill proof spouts with no vents. No more simple to use Gerry cans...

Has anyone found a proper source for regular Jerry cans? Are use a siphoning technique to empty them into the fuel tank and never spell anything with this method.

Stupid EPA laws... I bet more fuel has been spilled with those crappy spouts now more than ever before!!

I am seriously considering just buying more potable water Jerry cans from scepter. And just painting them. Thoughts?

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

You can buy EPA gas/diesel cans and get non-EPA replacement spouts from several sources. Some people purchase a replacement spout for the water cans and find it fits gas/diesel cans in the same system. https://ezpourspout.com/ has spouts for many styles of cans. http://rotopax.com has spouts for Moller-Scepter cans and several others.

I use Eagle Type I Safety Cans for gasoline for outboard motors among other purposes. They are round which is perhaps not the ideal shape for storage but I find them easier to use than the EPA cans and believe that they are safer from a fire safety standpoint. They are available in red, yellow, and other colors. Can be bought in the USA.

If you have a four stroke outboard you can carry less gasoline as they are more fuel efficient.

For dinghy gasoline you can get an extra remote fuel tank and just swap tanks rather than pour.

Jammer,

Thanks for this. The spout I could live without completely as a siphon hose works best. I really want my Jerry cans to all have the same size to make lashing to the stanchions, stanchion boards simple and repeatable.

Thanks

Phil

All the EPA cans I've seen allow you to remove the nozzle completely for filling. Nothing to keep you from siphoning.

Jammer,

Yes, but they are fatter and do not sit on my cap rails as well. Take up much more space. They also did not come with a simple cap to eliminate the spout and had an internal insert in the nozzle of the ca that cannot be removed. Ever try filling one up at a diesel pump? Laughable...

I've seen good reviews for the metal fuel cans from Harbor Freight, of all places.

Metal cans in a salt air / water environment? Worries me. Looks interesting though.

Those metal cans also have that flame arrestor insert. Try filling it with diesel from a marine dock. Very difficult.

If the EPA had been around in WWII, we would have lost, because we couldn't have refuelled the trucks and tanks.
If you look at a genuine jeep can, there is a clever little vent under the cap, closed off when the cap is on, but open when the spout is attached.

The internal insert on most of these cans is easy to remove with needle nose pliers. Necessary if you want to use them for siphoning otherwise you can't get the hose to the bottom.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

where are you located?
I buy nearly every old jerry can I come across if they are the good old style.
Used at car show swap meets, flea markets, garage sales and craigslist.
The new fatter shape is less desirable to me.

On eBay I found the narrow Scepter Fg4rvd5 5 Gal Yellow Plastic Diesel Fuel Cans sold by a company called Zoro for $33 each. As Off Trail mentioned, I also removed the internal filters and use a siphon hose.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

I have 1/2 of a spill proof spout living in my monel fuel tank. Would take a major refit to access the tank and fish the spout out. Will it somehow block my fill tube and kill me someday? Part of the risk we assume when cruising I guess.

Additionally, the spout in my fuel tank symbolizes a malaise of incompetence that has permeated our government. There are so many government workers with nothing important to do that they are fixing things that aren't broken.

I can honestly say I have spilled about 10 times more fuel on average with these spill proof spouts.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

Used to know someone that worked at VP Racing fuels who clued me into their cans. They were made and sold to drag racing teams, dirt track racers, and other off road applications that not require meeting EPA regulations that mandated leaky spouts.

They are heavy duty, no spill, flexible spout, use hose and caps you can buy from any plumbing supply so easy to replace if lost or damaged.

Come in red for gas, yellow for diesel and white/clear for water. Get them on Amazon or eBay.
