Dinghy Name?

A name on a dinghy isn't required, and at least in California, needn't be registered or numbered if solely manually powered.

The other day saw a dinghy named Legal Tender.

Most all places in the USA do not require regestration numbers on dinks powerd by oars or sails. But do require them if power is used ! we have a sail- row dink and have no numbers on it ! when ya go to other places, it's quite common to use a outboard and not have any numbers ! We have done this for years and have never had any problems ! The only time we ever had any problems of any kind was in FLA, where a so called water Police man tryed to ticket us for sailing our un-numberd dink around the area we were anchored in ! He just did not wish to listen to our reasoning about the un-powerd dink, so we took his ticket, when we went to court we brought the proper rule numbers and such with us and the ticket was dismissed! and the Officer was chewed out for wasteing the courts time !! Our dinks name is Lightning, we will let ya guess the ships name LOL

Our boat is "Camelot" which is stenciled on the side of the dinghy with a TT designation... The actual name of the dinghy is "Merlin".

I don't buy into the theory that thieves look for your dinghy on shore to determine if you boat is unoccupied by using the TT Name... When I want to know if someone in the anchorage is on the boat, I look to see if your dinghy is tied to the back of your vessel. If it is not attached to your boat, obviously you are not on board... I believe the criminals do the same, so unless you have a decoy tender tied to your boat, most likely criminals will guess your not home regardless if you dinghy has a name on it or not.

On the other hand I have been seen dinghies recovered after they floated away or were stolen, because the boat name was on them... Also the TT Name on the side of the dinghy will help when you dock your dinghy with 100 other gray ribs to identify it, like at Catalina Island or any other large anchorage.

Do the right thing. A dinghy/tender is a vessel in its own right and deserves its own name; not just "Tender To".

Ours is named after the grand daughters Lani and Dani (Alana and Daniella). It's called the LaniDani and the motor is named after the step sister ChaCha.

In many jurisdictions, "Tender To" is obligatory unless the tender is registered as a separate vessel.

In answering my own question, I found a list of exemptions for the state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Boat Registration Instructions | DMV.org

It says non motorized sailboats under 12 feet are exempt. Any manually propelled vessel that's not furnished with a motor or sail. This includes canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. Also ship's lifeboats.

So if your dinghy is your ship's lifeboat it would be exempt in Wisconsin, but I don't know if it has to be labeled as such. Clearly, with no motor and under 12 feet if equipped with a sail it is exempt.

If one is interested, the dinghy will find its own name and let you know. Not everyone cares to give it a name. It has to do something special to earn it. Our first, "Zod the Magnificent", was a go fast, fun inflatable hypalon Zodiac. The second, was "Disby", a DSB, German boat, for "Dis Be the New Boat." Then the present one was nondescript, and it took a long time to discover its name, as Jim wrote, a few years back.
