Thanks!, didnt think it was going to be that easy... i got mine completely opened up today and all i need is new freewheel sprockets, dont know how im going to get the old ones off the shaft though

inthewind - i looked there for parts and i also looked at the slspares outfit in the uk, Simpson Lawrence Yacht parts and spares, even with the currency conversion they are cheaper on everything!, the sprocket set i need is $128.00 from pyacht.com and $56.00 from slspares.co.uk,

anyways have a good reason not to order from the british outfit? shipping cant be that much to negate the savings, just a heads up if you need parts

Shaft has to be removed, then the sprockets thread off.

here goes for my stupid question of the day.... what is the point of the chain stripper, how does it work? any one have pics of a proper installation?

Got the windlass wrapped up today finally, had to machine the old sprockets off the shaft, once those were off and the new ones on, i was able to assemble the windlass in about an hour...

i dont think there were ever definitive instructions provided in this thread so hear are mine.

put the casing on the side with the gypsy end up

put the chain assembly in

put the pins in around the chains where appropriate

put the sprockets on the shaft and install the shaft

work the chains on to the sprockets when the shaft is all the way in

pull the chains taut and install the fitting for the handle

thats takes care of the hard part, the rest it fun.


soo glad to have this done now and im only in it for $200

The chain stripper prevents the chain from wrapping completely around the sprocket causing it to jamb

I just finished disassembling my 510 unit and would suggest that if you feel your bearings are ok, don't disassemble. (If it's not broken, don't fix it) just empty the oil and check to see if it is full of junk. If there aren't any ball bearings in the oil or chunks of metal, then you can clean it out with a washing of transmission fluid and drain, then put your 140 wt gear oil in and grease the fitting on the clutch. If you do need to break the unit down, let me know and I can walk you through the project with some pics and video. As far as parts go, slspares.com has all the parts necessary to rebuild, but they are very expensive and I was able to get everything I needed from a bike shop for less than 20 bucks, with the exception of the bearings. Those can be made by a local machine shop for less than what you buy them for. Cheers.

I wrote that nothing was jammed, but it's not the case. The clutch is. And the loose in the drum tells me new bushings are in order. But the action seems quite good, the back and forth from the lever transmits quite smoothly to the drum. Nonetheless, this jammed clutch alone telles me that I have to disassemble at least part of it. I took off the grease nipple and there are a lot of rusty gunky stuff in there.
