Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I thought we went to sea for the FREEDOM away from the constraints of ashore life. "The Rat Race"
Hey you!! you can't park there, Wham ticket/fine, penalty.
"Media" A roadshow.
The livetracker has been great though.
Jean Luc Quote: "The problem is not the big wave in the Southern Ocean. The problem is finding the money".
70 odd grand for a competitive boat, and then yard modifications to comply at £50 odd quid an hour, then all the add ons. well over £100 grand in total, plus entrant fee of $17 grand oz.
Don has been there. McIntyre Adventures, kinda knocks a bit of the shine off it.
Well!! I have had a good old moan.
Just like to wish everyone a Merry Xmas and Happy sailing next year especially the competitors.
I'm off to do the Great Loop next year, just to ease back in, after being out of the game with two knee replacements for quite a while.
Y'all be good now.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

An observation re the 46*S limit.....

A week or so back Istvan was given permission to cross the 46* line without penalty... therefore getting into better weather and (imo) putting himself in a far better position for a clean run to the Horn.

Meanwhile down the back of the fleet Tapio is still hobbled by the limit....

This meant that a few days back he was stuck with a fresh N'ly on the beam....
Sounds like fun? Nope.... that would give him a short steep sea that would be an absolute cow to deal with... whereas putting the sea a few points abaft the beam would have given him a good fast and comfortable run..... straight into the penalty zone.

Now the rule has put him to the north of a very small area of high pressure.. and easterlies are forcing him further north ......into more easterlies and the centre of a small high.....

If I was him I would be lodging a protest.....

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

The two leaders, JLVDH and Mark Slats, are only about 550 miles apart.

Right now, the leader JLVDH is heading SE.

I wonder what's up with that? Light, fluky winds, Autopilot problem while he sleeps? Mast problem has reoccurred?

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

VDH is taking his 18 hour time penalty.

Seems the weather gods are not with him, does not look good for the next week with light winds, while Mark will have a good run.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

From GGR facebook page:

UPDATE Jean Luc Van Den Heede 18 Hour time penalty.

To be clear, Jean Luc VDH agreed to everything about the time penalty and it's implementation including the process to start the penalty from an East West line at his exact position at 0010UTC 5th January and would move SOUTH of that line for 18 hours.

Unfortunately he mistakenly sailed north of that line. When GGR advised him of his error , He would not believe it was possible and said he was SOUTH of the line. By the GGR tracker he was NOT. He was adamant that he could NOT be North of the line. We advised him he had been for approx 3 hours and he must get under the line again to continue the remaining time.

If you look at the track you will clearly see he tacked North again and passed NORTH of the line just over three hours later? You do NOT need a GPS or sextant to stay clear of that boundary. Just Dead reckoning navigation. It is unfortunate but GGR MUST and does work to the Notice of Race. #GGR2018

He's serving the penalty after unauthorized by GGR satellite phone call.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Meanwhile down the back of the bus...Tapio is still stuck above the DMZ in a rising northerly.... that wont be a lot of fun.

Between that restriction and his barnacles what are the odds he retires at or before the Horn?

Is it just me or did this thread go very quiet after that hot pommie chick retired?

Close, but no banana.

It went quiet because SP is in Antartica playing with penguins (you are missing out) and the REAL star of the show, Captain Coconut was seduced by the dark side and decided to spend Christmas in Adelaide.

Got an idea bout a vintage RTW race with simpler rules. Each contestant are given tools of their choice, half a ton hemp and linen, and to be send to a forest of their choice. First one to build a boat alone and sail RTW around the capes wins ;P

Nice idea but dangerous. There should be a specific build period for all. Reading history books, just finding that right tree for the keel is way important.

If one contestant had a better section of forest, he would have an advantage from the get go.

Vintge RTW? More like a reality TV show these days.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

The distance between the first and second placed boats is now only about 350 miles with over 2000 to go.

This could get interesting......
