New Flag For New Zealand?

The New Zealand government has published a list of 40 new flag designs that could replace the country's current flag, pending the result of a vote in March.
New Zealand's new flag could be one of these 40 designs - Trending - CBC News

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

I like a lot of them, but I am not from NZ so I don't count.

I wonder if this will cause a similar discussion in Oz?

I think they all look like Christmas wrapping paper. What's wrong with the existing flag, not politically correct?

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

For some of us who have had to manufacture courtesy flags from spinnaker scraps, several of those designs would be nightmares to make! But then, so is the union flag...

It will be interesting to see which they choose... if they actually do so.

I wonder if they are going through the same fuss Canadians did when we changed our flag?

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

Personally I feel the Southern Cross definitely needs to be part of it but what's with all the ferns and swirls? Very different flag designs and so many of them look very similar.

The silver fern has been a NZ emblem for years.

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

Visually, I like the "Black Jack", but I sure as heck wouldn't want to have to hand craft it. Swirls are really hard to make work. Great for silk screening, though.

I like having the Southern Cross in it.

The same thing that is wrong with the Aussie flag.

Time to move on from the post-colonial flag to a flag that represents the majority of citizens

I hope the idea catches on in Aus

'Pony Tail' Keys wants a new flag... nobody else seems to give a monkey's. Turnouts at the various events to promote his agenda had miserable turnouts , 27 people at one, fewer people than there were presenters at another.
Of course there will be 41 choices.. I know which one my money will be on.

Sounds like it would be a dull event.

These days if people want to express their opinions on the many choices they'd probably be more happy to do it from the comfort of home on social media.

Real interest will probably not pick up until the short list for the referendum is decided

I like the ones with the splattering of red blood from the Kiwis latest sporting disaster against the Aussies.

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

Careful Mark, they just showed a rugby match from Eden Park here and the All Blacks kicked the snot out of the Wallabys - it wasn't pretty, at least from an Aussie perspective. A sporting highlight of our circumnavigation was a game on a giant projection TV at the Royal Suva YC between NZ and Oz. The Kiwis won that one too although it was not nearly as one-sided. Did I mention that there was free beer for the night? It was a dress rehearsal for the upcoming World Cup, which the All Blacks won if I remember correctly. We did the Aussies beat South Africa in cricket while we were sitting in a bar at the Royal Natal YC in Durban. No free beer though.

I think the idea of a new flag for New Zealand is great though. I wish them good luck in their selection process.

Back to sailing and courtesy flags. We use the $2 stick flags whoever possible. We bought some extra red ensigns (would have been nice to have some blue ones too) and cut and pasted them with pieces of ripstop as necessary. Worked well. We even made a Niue flag although we did not go there. Were able use the fly of a red ensign, after using the jack for the Cook Islands (I think it was).

Re: New Flag For New Zealand?

In my 70 odd years I have seen this flag business crop up and die out three or four times, never comes to anything.

What is wrong with being true to our anglo-saxon roots as indicates by our existing flag?
