Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'm going to shout, THANKS NOLEX FOR PROBABLY THE BEST THREAD ON ANCHORING YET. Poor anchoring is probably the number one reason for boats being lost.
THANKS NOLEX

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Wow, I must get a copy. Something else to read in my berth at night or when on watch!

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'm not a anchor designer, but I'm sure that the burying of the flukes are designed to be optimum with a 4:1 scope with a tight rode. Once it's buried then the weight of the rode should lay it along...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

This a example of a anchor that has not been set IMHO. The problem is that the chain is flat along the bottom and the shank is clearly laying downwards instead of parallel to the bottom. In the the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Nice to see you take a interest on this thread. I'm not CSI but the CQR you show looks like it was past it's useful life. Was it a real CQR or a copy? What make of anchor swivel was that and why did...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'm in the process of changing boats, but I've just qualified as a OW PADI diver, so watch this space, and yours?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Actually not true, if you look through his galley of pictures he has shown plenty of photo's of other anchors and he his self has a CQR on board. The common factor in all the others is they appear...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'm. Labor ing no than nolex is labor ing how great the Mantus is. You yourself says it's performing quite well, is that the anchor you have?
Let's see the photos of these CQR's with the bent...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I'm certainly not saying that the CQR is great anchor, I have 45lb as my secondary, but how the hell you could bend the shaft is beyond me. Mine is a genuine "I" beam articulated shaft and the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Nolex, maybe you are the only one who is setting your anchor halfway right?
The CQR will not have been around as long as it has if it were bad and for sure it's unlikely to bend its shaft.
I have...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Yes indeed SS is weaker than some other steels. But my point is that a properly designed anchor should not bend in the first place. The Bugel shaft is pretty big and on my 35kg job I can't see it...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

All of these photos are great, but they are all done in loose sand, much like the sand box test as done by Ultra in all of the shows.
The design of the Mantus might be good in the conditions...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Once again, this forum gets into the mutual admiration society and is not objective at all. It seems the more posts you have the more aggressive you are to occasional posters. Wow, I have not...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Mine is Lloyd's certified, well, that's what is lazer etched on the shaft.
I know nothing about metallurgy, but if mine bends along the shaft in mud sand and normal bottom types I would sell it for...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I thought that the genuine Bugel's are only in stainless. Are you sure yours is not a copy? Mine has beveled edges on either side of the flukes so any sideways pull would rotate the anchor in...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Fuss, actually I have a Bugel and it's stainless steel. If a anchor, any anchor, will not easily break free from the bottom, hauling on it until it bends is not a good idea. At this stage a trip...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

I don't think this a great anchor at all. It really overdid the bury, bent the shaft and is now pretty well useless.
I would stick to a anchor that has a good solid history of not failing, as did...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

It sure has worked well. It would be nice to see how the others faired.
Where are you? Was the wind a Mistriel?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

To be honest I wouldn't call that a great set. It's hardly covered the flukes. Yes the Mantus is ok. But I've seen no evidence that it any better than most others
At least you should keep " the...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

IMHO. All of the anchors photographed are good solid anchors. The difference being the setting of them, very poor in some cases and ok in others. Also all of these sets are in very soft beach like...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

These are all. Rey informative photos, thanks.
It shows me that this is the way to go with a anchor test rather than just pulling from the surface. What we need is a test, with photos, on different...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

Hi Nolex, my Genuine SS Bugel has a very sharp point. I think you could use it as a toothpick. It seems to dig in very well. Last year , it's a 30kg anchor, held three boats in a raftup, my Hans 38,...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

It's obvious to me that the Bugel in the photos was never set in the first place. Wind and ride did the job. But I wonder how far it moved when this happened?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting.

This anchor along with the other Bugel has just not been set properly. There is no way that these anchors would have stopped the boat going aft if any revs had been applied.
Not a good ad for...
