Before we came to the Red Sea I stocked up on drip filters (they were very cheap in Lidl ), I now have the painstaking job of cutting out 4 AeroPress filters from each one - there are 100 in each box. I've tested them and they work fine, can't be bothered to wash and reuse them yet though, I reckon I've got enough filter papers to last until we no longer drink coffee!

Re: Coffee maker...

I remember sailing with my dad years ago. Coffee was instant Nescafé Classic with condensed milk served up in a tin cup and ginger biscuits. Nostalgia tells me that that was the best coffee ever...in reality it's quite disgusting.

A Nespresso machine sorts out coffee requirments these days.

Cafes here is Greece advertise Nescafe instant as premium coffee . Truly, they add it to their chalkboard selection of drinks.

Nespresso machines are the bees knees if you have the power to run one. Don't knock ginger biscuits though .

The 'frappe' that all Greeks and many visitors seem to love is also made with Nescafe. A far nicer drink, offered alongside frappe (but it never seems as popular) is freddo espresso - an espresso shot poured over ice, lovely on a long hot summer's day.

I found a photo I snapped in Crete.
"Nescafe classic" and "Nescafe frappe" feature on the menu along with beer, ouzo, raki and brandy. No mention of any other kind of coffee .

Re: Coffee maker...

On the smart advice of a thread long ago on this forum we bought a Frieling SS double walled French press on Amazon. It's easy, there are no filters to buy and the double wall keeps the coffee hot for awhile and they are built to last. We now own three various sizes.

I like my coffee but not THAT much. I watched the Aeropress regime on youtube. Too many parts and too many steps. To each his own...

Re: Coffee maker...

Don't know what you saw on YouTube, but Aeropress is dead easy and quick.

1. Pull it open and set it on the plunger.
2. Fill with desired amt of coffee.
3. Fill with hot water and stir with teaspoon.
4. Cover with filter, flip over onto cup and empty into cup.
5. Remove cover, pop grounds into trash.
6. Top off cup with desired amount of water. Done!

I put milk in the cup before starting. By the time I stir the mixture in the press and get the filter on, it's pretty much steeped enough.

So just get a regular press. A stainless one like this will last longer.

Interesting, but wont be buying one for the boat.
In Poland back in the day (1990-1997)they would take the grounds/floor sweepings and put them directly into the coffee cup, add water and let it sit a few moments before consuming..I didnt realize that the grounds were in the bottom of the cup my first visit and subsequently got a mouth full of the foul grit .. On my second trip I bought my friend(The Polish World Paragliding champion,Christoph Dudinsky) a coffee maker similar to what you describe and it produced a much better cup of Java...What was more important to him and his crew was that I brought them "real coffee" as opposed to floor sweepings, turned out that at the time the Gov.had been working with one person/company to supply the whole country coffee and they were all rigging the deal so as to benefit personally from the floor sweepings...

Mellita even simpler.

1. Put filter in funnel over cup.
2. Put coffee in filter.
3. Pour hot water in filter.
4. Pop filter with grounds into trash. Done!

Sorry mycroft, I just had to get that in. If you look on youtube at both the Mellita and the Aeropress I think you must agree the Mellita is simpler. Still, I can appreciate a true coffee afficianado wanting the ultimate in coffee prep. I feel the same way about my Irish Potato Bread.

I will admit the one problem with the Mellita is that it's tough to use in a seaway. For that we go with the french press, or, in truly bad seas, instant coffee (there, I said it!).

Actually I use the Aeropress every day for many cups of coffee and I don't see any difference to the process you just posted. I don't use the upside down method. The method I use with the Aeropress is exactly the method you posted. The only difference is I pop the plunger in and wait 2 min before plunging.

I'm quite happy with my plunger mug. Doesn't come much easier than that. And the latest Zyliss ones have a nice tight fitting "sipper" lid as well - got one for Christmas!

(Nice to see that SWL has just got herself a couple too).
