If i find lookyloos peering in the porthole....I usually have fun with them something like this

Usually suspicious by now they ask why?

Funny, that! Me, I have little cardboard cutouts that I can put in the port lights and no one can see in. I like it that way.

But then, I have never had someone board my boat uninvited.

Just an idea:

Put a sign on the boat "Only board this boat if you fancy swabbing the deck for the next five hours"

Seems a fitting punishment, they scuff the deck, they do the cleaning.

Without the comma, "than" would be correct. With the comma, "then" is correct. Screwy language of ours.

My apologies if I dropped the cat in with the pigeons but I was just relating what worked for us in a marina in San Diego. Now living in Nevada, the attitude towards firearms is far different than many places elsewhere in the US. Because of the sensibilities of Californians in particular, having a Glock strapped to your waist seems to generate fear and perhaps loathing, but it works.
Signs meant nothing, jawboning just seem to invite verbal abuse but carrying a firearm without comment in a nonthreatening manner sure worked.
I can appreciate MarkJ's sensibilities as my wife still has family in Australia but they all grew up in 'Top End' and still carry firearms on their muster and are real salt of the earth types who brook no crap from anyone. Cheers, Phil

I need to make a correction:

We did have an intruder board us once. He tried to steal our outboard motor (probably to be sold on to Christmas--a crime that the police in the area were quite familiar with.)
However, he woke us up, and ran away without the motor, jumped into the water and swam away to shore.

To keep them off your boat, go to a feed store and buy a fence charger and wire. Install and link to metal rails and lines, warn people you like, and keep the dock and stairs watered down for a good ground.

I believe that location has already been mentioned as a factor. We are only at public docks about 7 days out of a year and this my be why we don't have a problem with people peering in our portlights.

Of course, boarders with theft intentions are different from "looky loos". We did have a young man attempt to take my son's surfboard from our deck about twenty years ago, but that's our only event. Location is likely a big factor with this too. We're not cruising in areas where we appear to have more wealth than those in our surroundings.

I guess I don't need to plan a defense, but I can understand this need for those cruising in some areas, whether it be protecting privacy or belongings.

You are absolutely right I didn't see the comma till I zoomed in.
