Gift ideas for a liveaboard woman!

Ok, so we are complete cheap a$$es and usually decide to not exchange gifts so that we are able to save more of our money. The end of this year marks our time to move aboard and begin our several year adventure of cruising. We've already begun selling all of our belongings so getting a gift now would be even more silly since we'd just sell it anyway at a loss...however, we did decide to try something new this year for our anniversary.

We've decided to give each other a gift but it must be usable on our boat! We haven't purchased her yet, so we don't have anything for her (or us), so I'd love some ideas. She is 27 with one child that will be 1 year old when we set sail, I was thinking maybe a french coffee press??? I could get her the fold up bike that we were already planning on getting but...rather get something more unique. Guess I could go with some organization stuff for the boat...nets and such....any ideas out there?!

If she's a coffee lover a French press would be good. The Aeropress is getting really good reviews on the coffee discussion.

If not that, then what does she like to do on the boat or at home? Any crafts or hobbies?

Does she like to paint and varnish or change oil? Get her some nice tools.

Of course the bike is a good one as well.

A fairly big plastic tub with a lid on it.

She can use it as a bath tub for the baby, for washing the clothes, and when not being used for either of the aforementioned, can be used to store things.

If you tie it down on deck in a rain storm, you can also collect the water for the bath and washing.

Happy anniversary!

Re: Gift ideas for a liveaboard woman!

I've been in your position.

1) Merino wool long under wear, it's not cheap, but it will be her new uniform.
2) Down slippers. They can be had for about $30-40. They'll keep her feet really warm.

Comfort can be really important for women on a boat, if you want her to enjoy it (and there for you enjoy it) make her comfortable.

When I lived on my 1974 Grampian 30 as a bachelor, it didn't even occur to me somebody might want running water, cooking appliances, electric lighting, to be warm etc. Apparently women do care for some reason. As long as there was some warm hard apple cider in the bilge and a radio station that played hard rock- I was happy.

She is a woman, don't kid yourself. Jewelry, jewelry, jewelry for and important anniversary. How about a locket inscribed with latitude and longitude of home?

Another couple of options:

High thread count sheets for the V-birth
Or a more budget oriented- but good option, just some good flannel sheets.

For some reason, my 30 year old sleeping bag just wasn't appreciated- I tried to explain that it kept me warm enough 50% of the time and most importantly it was paid for IN FULL!

If she's into coffee, get her an Aeropress. About $26 on Amazon, it will brew a great cup of coffee, it's polycarbonate so it won't break, and cleans up much easier than regular French presses.

Re: Gift ideas for a liveaboard woman!

My wife wanted unbreakable wine glasses. Also, boxes of wine.

Other ideas:

-Sat phone (expensive).
-Cruising guide for the first place you are heading.
-A bucket - On one side write "Toilet", on the other write "Sink".
-Neoprene sailing/kayak boots...they are awesome.
-A Rocna anchor, name it Jesus. The first time you are at an anchorage with 40knot winds, this will make perfect sense.

My wife looked strangely at me when I gave her one , but now she doesn't know how she ever lived without one

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

I gave my wife an electric sump oil extractor pump, it wasn't well received which is strange, because I know she doesn't like using the manual one. My buddy gave his wife a Baby Blake head for Christmas, but I wouldn't recommend that given her unfriendly response. Difficult question, but I hope you are more appreciated than we were.

Just remember if you give her a knife as a gift get her to pay for it somehow, like with a penny or a loonie so the knife doesn't sever the friendship. A little superstitious maybe, but why mess around with things like that.

Re: Gift ideas for a liveaboard woman!

Family Van's ideas sound good to this woman, but if you are in the northern hemisphere, you are heading for warm weather and so maybe they wouldn't be useful now. (But a great idea for cold weather)

Some other suggestions:
Good sunglasses with straps (essential for sailing)
Waterproof bag for Iphone, or camera
Sailing gloves if she finds handling lines hard on her hands (I don't use them but I know many women who do)
A wet weather jacket, or boots - its a more expensive item.
Lifejacket/harness combo
Handheld VHF

I remember a birthday when Manny bought me my first good set of foulies. I was thrilled.
