New Year's Fireworks Around the World

Happy New Year!
A few years ago we spent New Year's Eve on our sailboat in Philipsburg, St. Maarten in the bay:



It was the coolest fireworks show ever. Amazing weather, just beautiful night!
Granted, it's hard to get good pics of fireworks but here are a couple shots.





Where have you seen some awesome fireworks shows on New Year's Eve? Let's see your photos and hear your stories from previous years and this year after tomorrow night!

We are spoiled, we get two shows a year, Australia Day and NYE, and we can anchor so close it would be dangerous.


Heading out tonight for the show, forecast is good enough that we can remain at anchor after the display and head back to the club in the morning. Should be fun. I should try to get some photos, I have never tried before. I'll bring the GoPro too.

The Northern Territory in Oz still allows you to buy fireworks for Territory Day. We are so spoiled for displays at anchor when you also throw in the Casino on the beach. Looking at having Dads ashes going off with a bang next year!

Hmmm... here's a tip for GoPro users. Check the settings BEFORE the fireworks. Turns out I was still in the fish-eye view from the last diving trip.

But it was a lovely night out last night. More boats around the jetty than I have ever seen before, so the secret is getting out. Moored about 300 meters from the fireworks and enjoyed the light and noise, followed by a good night at anchor, though starting 2016 at 6am when the wind came up was less than ideal.

Alas, mine has nothing to do with sailing other than there were sailboats in the background.

This past year, 04 July 15, I was at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. USA for the 'Fare Thee Well Tour' of the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. I was in the nose bleed section of the west wall looking out over Chicago Bay and Lake Michigan and the boats out there. Atop the north wall the American Flag was spotlighted, flapping in a steady breeze, Above the east wall was the Steal Your Face Skull, and above the stadium was a blimp circleing, with the little dancing bears flashing in LED lights. About 9:00 pm a huge beautiful 3/4 moon rose over all that. About 10:00 pm the cities of Chicago to the north, and South Chicago (to the south, obviously), simultaneously set off their fireworks. Then, as a grand finale, at the finish of the show the Grateful Dead set off a display that rivaled Chicago's, to the tune of "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Truly amazing. I wish I had a photo or video, but retain only memories.

NYE here in Kingston ON Canada is a cold affair. Ironically, the fireworks display is at the park portion of the downtown marina (confederation basin) where I keep my boat in the summer. I sat on a thermarest atop a stone battery (for cannons, not the electric kind) staring out over the empty slips. All the boats are on the hard, despite the warm winter we have been having. My emotions are completely mixed as I look out over the water, devoid of all boats except the ferry at this time of year, and watch the fireworks.
