Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

This guy did a solo circumnavigation 2006-2009 in a 19' boat designed for lake sailing. Quite a performance.

Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

Back in the day in my early 20's I used to sail back and forth to the Bahamas in my 21' San Juan Clark sail boat for a few years. A hundred bucks in my pocket, cheap Coleman 48 quart cooler, dry ice, a portapotty, and a SeaGull 5hp. Some of the best carefree times in my life. I didn't know I didn't know any better.

Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

I wouldn't call it cruising but I once met a fellow who crossed the Atlantic in a boat less than six feet long, twice. Hugo Vihlen lived next door to a friend of mine and he had April Fool sitting in his back yard. He gave me a tour of the boat one day. The tour didn't take very long. The boat was shorter than I am tall.

Now you're showing your age Hop. I remember my Dad going on about the April Fool when I was a kid.

Ain't it the truth. I'm too old for that kind of stuff. Headed over to The marine stadium to set up my booth today. When do you set up yours?

Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

I'm setting up Tuesday at 8am (yuck I-95 traffic) over at the Strictly Sail side. We keep missing each other. I'm really gonna have to pay you a visit at your shop one day.

Best Regards

Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

Flickas are only 20 feet, but I know many of them have done long ocean passages. Just remember, the shorter the boat, the longer the trip, other things being equal. Longer and faster means less chance of horrible weather, etc.... Something to consider, imho... I've done 200 mile ocean races in up to 40 knots of gale in my old Yankee 30 and felt quite safe in that boat. Design is everything..... Do lots of homework......

When you are 19 a 19 footer is great, and when you are 50, a 50 footer looks better.

This guy was my inspiration to learn to sail! I read his story in, I think, three issues of National Geographic in the early 70s late 60s...There's a film, too, that you can stream in Amazon....

So here is my question:what is the the longest distance you've sailed in the smallest boat you owned!?

The Curious Sailor

In a 24ft Shark sailed from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas. Met a family of Dad/Mum/2 kids that in the same model sailed from Vancouver to Queensland, Australia and another family that sailed from Toronto to UK and liveaboard in a Shark.
The boat can take it~~~Can you ?

Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

Back in the early 80s,some guy "sailed" a log from Vancouver to Hawaii. Probably the longest trip on a log. Refrigerators have crossed the Atlantic. Next record will probably be someone "sailing" a VW bug across the pond. Think "Tinkerbell" has the record for longest/smallest.

pirate Re: Longest Distance in the smallest boat...

A Brit got it together with an NZ gal in the UK and when she went home to Wellington he decided to build a boat and go join her..
Once across the Atlantic and Pacific and in NZ.. he decided to go home.. so he completed the circumnavigation via the Indian Ocean and S Atlantic..
He built and sailed on one of these.. and recently came second in the last Jesters Challenge Transat.. the same boat.. now maybe 20+yrs old
