Volvo MD2040 Year 2003

Hi

I bought a 36' Seal that has a VP MD2040; unfortunately the previous owner cooked the engine, resulting in a cracked cylinder head and scouring of the cylinders.
I took the engine out and according to the local mechanics, we can rebore and re sleeve with Perkins sleeves, allowing the use of a standard major overhaul kit; any idea where I can source the kit? found 1 online from an Ebay seller for USD800 plus USD200 airfreight..
But trying to find a replacement head is almost impossible...closest I got was from a Canadian site Ebay for USD700 plus USD250 freight..
Also need a circulation pump and that is another USD800 new ex UK plus freight...

Almost getting uneconomical to fix. What are your thoughts?

Re: Volvo MD2040 Year 2003

My thought would be to just buy a new D2-40 - it will be a drop-fit onto your beds and require minimal rerouting of hoses. You are already 50% into the price (made some assumptions about labor costs), and haven't discovered what else looks good now, but is about to fail right after the rebuild because of the PO issue.

Thanks for the input Mark

Yes you are correct, a new VP D2-40 is around USD6900 over here installed with 3 months waiting time for stock

Rebuilding the old MD2040 is around USD3000 installed. What did you mean by PO issue please?

I meant the "cooking" from the previous owner (PO).

Re: Volvo MD2040 Year 2003

Thanks Mark for clarifying PO eheh

Yes I agree also that the old engine may not be trusted 100% even after a rebuild...

I had an alternative engine ex USA offer I was working on, being a Perkins 4-108, 2500 hours, had a top overhaul, including impeller replaced etc. Also included all the adapter parts to fit my ZF MS15L gearbox. Installed would work out around USD3700 with shipping/fitting/labour/Customs etc. Engine can be here within 3 weeks

I cannot afford a new engine right now so thought the 4-108 would be a better solution if I cannot trust the MD2040 rebuild...

4108's are good engines, besides marine are used as stationary and tractor engines. I have one on a generator that has 10,000 hours.

Sounds like deal..

Don't discount the amount of work required if you need to change hoses or mounting beds. My research showed it can add up really fast.

Re: Volvo MD2040 Year 2003

Thanks Guys for the input

Luckily for me, despite my despair at having to repair/replace the engine, being in Malaysia has the advantage of cheaper labour and fabrication cost

Hoping that 4-108 is still available ex USA...

Cheers

Update
The 4-108 is still available luckily so that is the path I will take. Seller was kind enough to reduce the price a bit to compensate for the currency exchange loss so it's a win win situation
Should be here within 6 weeks hopefully, will keep the thread alive

Re: Volvo MD2040 Year 2003

Update
Perkins deal did not happen as the seller became tied up in other activities, instead of getting the engine ready for shipment...
So m back with overhauling my Volvo MD2040, at least it will be as new by the time it's finished, with new head, pistons, bearings etc etc. Should be good for another 2000 hours I hope
There are still lots of new parts for them but you need to shop around the World really. Seems the UK has the biggest stock

You should add another zero to that number. I just heard of a Shibaura S753-D (Volvo MD2030 or Perkins M30) with 18000 hours on it! Your MD2040 is based on a Shibaura block as well!

A dealer that was recommended to me is.
TAD for perkins engines, perkins diesel, perkins marine, perkins parts, perkins generators, perkins service
They seem to carry everything with either green (volvo) or grey (perkins) paint. Check them out if you can't find something!
