Re-engine Prout 37

I am on my second Volvo Penta and my third Silette Sonic drive! I am fed up!
Recently crossing the South China Sea we had a huge lightning strike, which blew all my electronics ( chart plotter, AIS, lights, every thing)
Including the engine control panel, so to start the engine I have to jump the starter and then flash the field wire on the alternator.
Volvo have quoted me over US 2000 to replace the control box, harness, and instruments, with no guarantee that this will work, I have had enough, I will use it as a mooring block!
I am thinking of a diesel outboard, or a pair of 10-15s, Does anyone have any experience of this, or any advice? Please any contribution will be gratefully received.
The only up side is I ended up in Labuan, in Malaysia, and the beer is about US $ 12 for a case of 24, I may just stay here!!!
,Many thanks, Moggie

While having nothing to contribute a question out of interest:
What went wrong with your Sonic drives? (had one in a former life-81- & I rem er mber it as a very sturdy bit of kit)

You could set up a circuit that operates the starter and brings the alt on line. And any gauges will work with new senders. You couldn't give me a Volvo.

Consider yourself lucky.....Last time my boat got hit by lightning, everything electrical or electronic got fried....alternator and starter included. And if your engine was electronically controlled, there wouldn't be any jumping the starter motor to get it running.

It's not that active, and doubt anyone there has ever run a diesel outboard. People have re-powered i.e. changing from 20hp engines to 30hp, or going for petrol outboards, but thats about it.

The good news is that in Asia Yanmar Diesel outboards seem much easier to buy than in Europe. The not so good news is that they are heavy and don't seem to have much/any advantages. That being said I've never come across them in real life.

Getting rid of the Sillette drive will probably be a bonus though, especially now that parts are become more and more scarce.
