It was a bronze post and the aft cabin had a sail drive at some point a settee and table was removed and a permanent berth relaxed it. It had wheel steering. This boat had a lot of teak on it.

There sure is a lot of square footage on a Searunner 37's deck! I've started stripping mine, which is a mess. Here is what I have: on top of the original sand non-skid is a layer of fairing, seems like Bondo. It is 1/8" to 3/8" thick and some spots it is adhered well and other places it just chips off. On top of that is a very thick layer of paint which seems like it was applied with a mop.

I've found the fastest, cleanest way to get this mess off is with a heat gun and a putty knife. Sanding doesn't cut through the thick layers of stuff. It goes very slowly. It takes about an hour per 6 sq ft. The stuff is heavy too. Each garbage bag full weighs about 30 pounds. I'm on my third bag.

Solid decks are nice until you have to redo a botched redo. Oh well, when it is done my boat will be pretty again.

I agree about the heat gun, just be careful of the glass. A flat or semi gloss paint cuts down on the imperfection perceptions and glare.

Adding fairing filler can really weight a boat down, especially one with wing decks. It is easy to hurt the performance and payload. The shiny ones aren't always faster....

Mark, got your ears on? I am talking to Sunrise Yacht Products about bow nets and am currently leaning towards 1" web with 1 1/2" spacing, vinyl coated. My previous black polyester lasted over twenty years until they got "furry" and I trashed them. Those were 2" webbing. Richard at Sunrise recommends the one inch web. Any comments?

On other fronts, I am weaning off my old customers and preparing to go back into full-time work on my own boat within about a month or so. Getting the mast and new sails is the first big commitment, finishing off the galley remodel and replacing the aft cabin furnishings is next. Then I begin the dodger and Bimini. Last will be the repaint of the decks and cabin top, replacing the old deck gear, the long-awaited swim/dive/boarding ladder, and the RIB retrieval system. Absolutely last is the solar array. It's been a long wait, but I have been busy in the meantime with the infrastructure of engine, electrical system overhaul, and lots of weird projects, such as the only eye-level oven Force 10 stove on the planet. Hope this all works out as planned. I will be sending updates as they happen.

Hey Roy,

Web nets add a lot of windage. I remember the Farrier with one that went over backwards cresting a wave at speed going into a strong wind. One crew didn't make it clear.A wing deck boat already has a lot of deck space, a regular net will catch you and the sails without upsetting the apple cart. This is one place less is more.

Roy, give us an idea of the net pricing.

I made two roughly 5' by 6' nets last week. I used fiberglass rod around the edges and hockey netting from west coast nets. Took a bit of work, but seem to work well. I think it would be possible for them to make the net with a heavier line than is stock. The stock diameter is about 4mm 6mm would be better. I used polyester as the 4mm was not much weaker than the ultra cross 2mm most people use for 10x the price.

I have no expectation of how long they will last, but I would think for sure 2-3 years of hard cruising. The fiberglass rods are reuseable and the netting cost $60 including shipping. I did think about using 1" webbing. Was going to get monel office staples and 5200 and staple the crosses and 5200. Sew the edge joints.

I won't share the prices with you as it would probably be too disturbing for your sensibilities. It just demonstrates the range and requirement extremes of our individual choices. Probably like our boats, themselves.

To me light is more important. I like the Jim Brown philosophy that these are cruising boats and shiny is too hard to maintain. I like shiny but I don't like the work to get there.

I had my boat in the yard last summer and asked for the advice of the local paint shop. The owner asked me "what kind of finish looks best to you? What do you actually like best?" I looked around the yard, looked at my boat, and answered "what I really like is the look of orange peel." The owner replied "well that's good to know. You can probably do that best yourself." And I have taken his original advice to heart.

I rolled and tipped, so, some brush strokes are for me. I also used semi-gloss paint.
