Re: Robertson Caine Catamaran Dismasted

Honestly, as much as I am not a big fan of leopard Catamarans, this is probably more of a thread that should have said: catamaran dismasted.

The brand hardly enters into this at all I think

Re: Robertson Caine Catamaran Dismasted

Yes, but, all 3 string rigs are vulnerable.

The mono we were dismasted in had single lowers, and it was a single spreader rig. After the mast fell over the port side, there was only a clevis pin rolling on deck between the chainplate and the toe rail. Was the cotter pin snatched out when we hove to? Or did it fail?? We'll never know. We had suffered a knockdown a few days before, was something damaged then? Long time ago. If we'd had double lowers, might it not have happened? Dunno.

frankly it's not surprising that a mast comes down in such circumstances. rather given the general lack of knowledge and maintenance to be seen every day, it's surprising that there are not more...

cheers,

Some riggers recommend replacing standing rigging at 10 years.

True, and another factor which surely applies to cats in general is that simple cat rigs can never be tensioned fully, and are not designed to be - the bridgedeck will just bend. The result is plenty of slack on the leeward shroud when sailing which, in turn, results in snatch loads and plenty of potential for pins shaking out when maintenance is poor.

Re: Robertson Caine Catamaran Dismasted

I was sailing from Grenada to Cariacou and had 30 knots of wind. I had two reefs and the charter boat next to me was flying full sails. The stress on the sails and rigging was definitely excessive.
