There was a foiling tri cruising around the Pacific in the late 70s. It never went mainstream but material science has progressed a lot since then.

Can't or won't? They CAN sail these boats in any and all of these conditions. The organisers choose not to let them race.

Because of the sailing directions, discussed earlier. These are not capricious decisions.

Re: Twenty Knots

It appears that with all the cancellations, the AC has exceeded it's contracted TV schedule with NBC sports and we won't get to watch today's races live.

In hindsight, it seems like way too much emphasis (course and rules) was placed on satisfying the relatively few spectators along the shore in SF rather than the potentially much larger international TV audience.

The teams vetoed yesterday's races even though the organizers offerred to set up a different course to compensate for the winds that were expected because they didn't want to sail out of their comfort zone since the only course they had practiced all these months was windward/leeward along the shore. Greatest sailors in the world and they are unprepared to sail a triangle.

Clearly I was wrong about the lack of TV coverage. AC website doesn't list any coverage after September 21, and NBC Sports (220) didn't show it on the schedule but started the broadcast at 1pm unannounced anyway.

Re: Twenty Knots

Looks like Spithill has started to remember he is Jim Spithill and is beginning to win the starts consistantly. That along with the fact that the boys are all starting to learn their jobs appears to be paying off. Plus, Slingsby and Anslie seem to be working well together.

Still a long way to go though.........

Re: Twenty Knots

What I'm concerned with is since both teams are dialed into their respective boats, it just might come down to the 2 point penalty. If we reach 7 points before the Kiwis reach 9, then it was the penalty that sent the Cup to NZ, and that would hurt. As much as I would like to see more racing, I hope the Kiwis win another race before we reach 7 points or for the US to sweep all the remaining races and keep the Cup.

Re: Twenty Knots

To those who whinge about the upper speed limit, just remember to think in apparent wind speed terms, these boats are seeing apparents of 40-50 knots. The clunky old 12 metres wouldnt have started a race in over 35 knots, to see apparents over 40, what makes you think these boats should

Re: Twenty Knots

Yeah, but would the 12metres really have seen 40kts AWS in 35 kts true?

Re: Twenty Knots

I'm starting to think Oracle may just be the faster boat. Combine that with winning starts, and they may just pull this out.
