Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

Most (maybe all) Moodys have a fin and skeg rudder, and they started adding sugar scoops in the '80s. So the list would include my old M28, M31 Mk2, M336 M346 and M376 etc. all from the 80s. Later boats would include the Moody S31 and S38.

There must be some call for that design. The Sceptre 41 later added a sugar scoop to become the Sceptre 43.

They are out there.

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

I have a 1995 Catalina/Morgan 45 with both, the skeg is partial and the scoop is a little shallow and high from the waterline but it all works for us.

Including my M44 and maybe not coincidentally my Taswell49 designed by Bill Dixon.

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

To add to the long list of boats with half-skeg, semi-balanced rudder boats with sugar scoops - almost all Moody Yachts. After sailing Beneteau's and others with spade rudders - unstable downwind and difficult for autopilots to control, the half-skeg, semi-balanced approach wins every time. It is strong, stable and doesn't bend easily (I know having grounded a bent a spade rudder of a Westerly and, fortunately, grounded and failed to bend the rudder on my Moody 44!).

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

One of my favorite designs with a beautiful sugar scoop transom and a skeg hung rudder is the Hylas 49. This is a well balanced sea-worthy and great looking design by Sparkman and Stevens and a great combination performance, sea-kindly motion and comfort all in a great looking package...

Good luck in your search ...

Some Island Packet models! One reason these boats remain so popular.

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

Nice boat but both of my boats have spades and my Perry designed Mirage hasn't needed a autopilot because it is so balanced. Often leave it unattended for an hour with no issues. My Beneteau is terrible when motoring but perfectly fine when sailing.

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

The Outbound 46 was originally specified with your choice of skeg or partially balanced spade rudder. They only list the spade rudder now, but I think some were built with the skeg, and I bet they'd build one for you if you wanted.

Re: List of boats with skeg and sugar scoop

Had a boat at my marina in Yorktown, VA that went aground via the skeg. The skeg was fairly substantial. The damage caused the boat (from the skeg racking) to be a write-off. A spade rudder would likely have bent the shaft, but the boat would have not suffered its rear hull being so stressed. An isolated case, perhaps.

The boat was towed back to the marina. It couldn't sail with the rudder as damaged as it was, despite the skeg.
