these guys need to watch the weather patterns for the next 3 months, they might be able to make it in may or june, but not febuary or march. (i don't like going to the gulf of maine on a 90ft commercial fishing boat in those months let alone a 40ish gaff rigged sloop)

The map looks like a pinball game. I think once they get clear of anything else to run into, like all of the British Isles, they are bound to make it. As long as they can dodge ice bergs, Greenland and Canada, they might bump into Maine. Clearly that's a tough boat that can take a lot of abuse!

Yeah, they may be senile, just I don't one day want the State deciding what I can and cannot do, for my own good.
That is a fine line of course as we don't live in a vacuum. I dislike making someone wear a seat belt or wear a helmet on a motorcycle, but should I have to pay for their medical bills or disability, because they didn't?
That's the line to me, I don't have a good answer.
Funny thing is, being Retired Military I am subject to a "line of duty investigation", if I am found to be disabled or injured due to breaking a law, like driving drunk, or not wearing a seat belt, motorcycle helmet or whatever, I am liable for all costs.

Ships transiting the North Atlantic have lighter loading requirements. My father was in the navy and merchant service in WWI and WWII and dreaded the North Atlantic in winter.
We get these stories all the time in the Pacific North West. Fair weather sailors don't want to believe the commercial fishermen on these waters in winter. They think they can tough it out. It seems every month this winter some yachtsmen have been rescued off Oregon and Washington.

It's time these two concluded their trip before someone innocent gets hurt, such as a Search and Rescue volunteer.

Nine times is just way too far and it's clear their not taking it at all seriously.

I know some of you on here are fine in making light of the situation, but if these two drown or cause someone else to drown, how funny will it be then?

I really liked Boatie's post in the beginning of this thread. It was full of knowledge about what can go wrong in an old timber boat--he referred to her as a Princess without lace, iirc. He hit on the fact that going to the north part of the North Sea at this time of year is difficult sailing. And I felt I ought to cut those guys some slack.

Now, we all know, supposed information from the media is likely to be exaggerated. And so, not having listened to the interview, I find myself wondering about the accuracy of what's been reported. I ask myself, "is it true that they grounded (requiring help) 3 times? Is it true that they called for help 5 times? I ask, "Did they REALLY leave a candle burning when they left the boat?"

I confess, this morning, I used the "wtf" expression for the first time ever on CF (again, iirc). Of all the behaviors which have been reported of these two chaps, leaving ANY boat with an open fire is absolutely astounding to me. TO ALL YOU NEWBIES OUT THERE, DO NOT EVER FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER leave your boat with a candle, a heater, an oven/stove burning. Just say NO, if the notion erupts. Unless you have a subconscious wish to destroy it, that is)/

As an elder to the subjects of this thread, selfishly, I feel concerned about the example they're giving, too, and how it might affect me. [As some here may have noticed, I have a fertile imagination which sometimes arises and smites me!]

I surely do not want legislation against elders sailing.

A64Pilot mentioned that as a retired military man, he is responsible financially for efforts to save him if he were intoxicated, or in disobedience of other civil law. Anybody got any idea why that standard not be applied to all of us?

I am also wondering if the subjects of this thread just got in way over their heads, and don't know how to quit with honour....
