Its also a little easier to carry.

Re: Grumpy old men and boats.

Some modern designs on boats dont have handholds where you need them.
Not to mention the sharp edges instead of rounded....

A tendency to use non sailing interior designers to appeal to a certain market potential.

Mostly facetime, but all my text messages keep coming through via the ipad because it's linked to my broken iphone account via the icloud. My ipad thinks it's an iphone, doesn't realize his buddy died. It's very sad, I'll need to break it to the ipad gently of course.

When I hear people getting really, really enamored with such interiors, my commentary & suggestion goes something like this:
Okay, so (think) you truly love this boat's interior. Time to test out how much. And to do so, have your spouse/partner push or slam you into the edges & corners said furniture with all of the force that they can muster. That'll pretty much mimic what happens when you get thrown across the boat into that beautifully styled faux wood, with it's sharp edges, due to the lack of sufficient & proper handholds here belowdecks.

Then, as you're recovering from said shove by your lover. Once you're done contemplating whether or not to call Law Enforcement & a divorce attorney about this. Ask yourself the question:

"If the designers phuked up the cosmetics of the interior this badly, how well did they do when designing the sailing & structural bits"?

Some people get it, others, much to the detriment of the human gene pool, are allowed to live quite long, "safe", unintersting lives. All while propogating similar madness throughout every aspect of our culture. Doing things like padding playground equipment. And creating an environment of social conditioning where we're all brainwashed to where our first response to a looming or occurring problem, is to call someone else for help on our smart phones. Rather than excercising such traits as; self reliance, ingenuity, common sense, good judgement, thinking on our feet, & problem solving, etc.

YUCK!

1/. Equally applies to monos and Catamarans.

Why do manufacturers find the most exposed part of the vessel to put the helm? It requires extra expense to go and purchase wet gear, a lot of time stood their in brass monkey weather and hours of cold wet misery during a watch..

I think the Nautitech catamaran is the perfect example of this , while the rest of the crew / guests are enjoying the relative comfort of a protected cockpit or salon the poor helmsman is stuck out on the totally exposed extremes on the hull stern , i don't get it , spoils an otherwise very desireable boat

Easy.... one can see off the bow from either the port helm or starboard helm perfectly clear without an obstructed view, take your pick. The two helm positions also allow easy access down the center without having to walk around a helm placed in the center. No up, over and around stuff which is why most monohull manufacturers have now gone this route.

But unlike that tiller helmed catamaran thing, there's no massive wheelhouse or whatever it's called, totally blocking the helmsman's view.

Are you sure those weren't emergency tillers on the cat? I'm thinking they were. I've toured many cats with excellent indoor and outdoor helms, but that one.... well... different strokes I guess. But I'd hate to be a windsurfer of using a kayak anywhere near that cat.
What a nightmare in the tropics.

Shade is the most valuable commodity to protect one from skin cancer as well as the heat. Vessels built for Europe tend to seek the sun.

You asked.
I will not tell the story though.
It was hell though for over a month and after the wife and our friends got there we did not last long. We jumped ship and he kept all the money.
We think it is his MO.

Re: Grumpy old men and boats.

Wow, i guess. I am a really grumpy old guy because on our 1930 riveted iron hulled Brig the helm IS exposed, we DO stand watches, always with 2 on deck, and it sure ain't always FUN ..... BUT when its nasty there, the misery is shared, the report to the next watch(2 people) coming on deck is accurate, and when things DO improve there are always fabulous insights as to McGyvering and tweaking, and ALL the little things that were done manually without surrendering our vessel to the HOPE that a nav or computer program will save our ship's Company's derriere!

Spent too much time being abused in an open cockpit to control the boat. Saw "the light" and went to an enclosed pilothouse.

At some point it seems logical...

Particularly a power vessel, that has enough electrical power to cool said pilot house.
However where I like to sail, you want to be under shade, but as out in the open as much as you can to cool off. Regular hose downs with the cockpit shower helps. I'd die in a pilot house.
However my little crystal ball does I hope one day show said power vessel with enough electrical power to air condition the pilot house.
But until then I want to give the great wide open a try first
