South Bound, The answer is commonly referred to as a remote for your auto pilot. It lets you sit in the heated warmth of the companionway, underneath of the dodger, & alter your course as needed with the push of a button.

Grumpy old men and boats.

Helm station on my boat is as far back out of the cockpit as it can be, you almost sit on the transom. I like it like that as now that I have an AP, I only hand steer when I have to, and the rest of the time I want as much cockpit space as I can get, to stretch out and lay down or us eat at the cockpit table etc.
If my speed falls much below four kts, the Yanmar comes on line, but it's not all that bad as with the Autoprop I can get back to hull speed or close to it with only 1000 RPM. Maybe as I settle into Retirement that speed number will drop.

However even I who is no real Sailor know that if your trying to ghost along and get as much as you can out of the sails an AP is just not going to do as well as an experienced Helmsman.
Not that I am, but I do recognize that someone who is and really knows how to trim sails and has a set up to where they can be effectively trimmed, will sail circles around me

So.... if you're using the tiller on the starboard side and it's required that you move over to "the other side" to be able to see stuff on "the other side," then how do you see things on the starboard side while using the tiller on "the other side?"

The helm cushion on the Oyster will back the grumpy off any old salt.

Be glad to, sorry you had trouble with your homework.

Easy.... one can see off the bow from either the port helm or starboard helm perfectly clear without an obstructed view, take your pick. The two helm positions also allow easy access down the center without having to walk around a helm placed in the center. No up, over and around stuff which is why most monohull manufacturers have now gone this route.

But unlike that tiller helmed catamaran thing, there's no massive wheelhouse or whatever it's called, totally blocking the helmsman's view.

Are you sure those weren't emergency tillers on the cat? I'm thinking they were. I've toured many cats with excellent indoor and outdoor helms, but that one.... well... different strokes I guess. But I'd hate to be a windsurfer of using a kayak anywhere near that cat.
