Re: Satellite DSL for Cruisers in the Med

Interesting how all the countries have such varying requirements for getting prepaid sims. How is the 4G/3G coverage in Caribbean?

I suspect it's possible to put an antenna at the top of the mast, use a booster, and get reasonably good 3G/4G coverage. Probably not legal though.
It is my understanding that the common cellular/wireless omni directional antennas (-6 -12 db) have a very flat transmission angle and an electronic down tilt to their signal waveform. Combine this with a vessel pitching underway (or bobbing at anchor) and it translates to a crap carrier signal.

Re: Satellite DSL for Cruisers in the Med

Maybe OP means something different. I remember in good old days there was a thing called "asymetrical satellite data" or sometimes "satellite DSL". It worked like this: you had to send requests by landline/modem/slow cellular and you were receiving data back by satellite at megabit speeds. I had this installed, I had a "sky" PCI card which was actually a sat tuner, and a dish pointed at one of Astra sats. I believe I paid some reasonable moneys for traffic. The only drawback was a latency - it took some time to "that side" to respond via satellite, but once you had a responce - download was very fast. I believe the system died as cheap broadband got available.

I don't know current state of affairs in this niche, but there are some options available, google for "one-way satellite internet".

So, technically speaking OP was using the correct terminology, but I am not sure he was meaning exactly the tech I was talking about. As well, there will be a need of a cellular data channel for upstream traffic anyway, plus I don't even know how to make this thing work on the boat with constant motion. You can, however, screw the dish to the dock in marina and enjoy more or less high speed sat inet.

PS googled this (pricy, but requires smaller dish) and this (looks pretty interesting with quite reasonable prices! Most Meds will require 90-100 cm dish to reliably receive data with them)

Re: Satellite DSL for Cruisers in the Med

Im guessing the ill-mannered bloke who started this thread was looking for this :
Tooway – Fast internet everywhere

the internet access isnt too pricey , but a compatible gyro stabilized antenna is .. ive heard 6000 bucks..

I know. Throw a gift line like that out there and nobody bites. I was all warmed up and waiting for the abuse to come rattling in like shrapnel, too.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Everybody has their price. Hey, at least I'm not a politician or a lawyer. I do have SOME standards.

Re: Satellite DSL for Cruisers in the Med

I read the whole thread...arggg, just to ensure no one informed the OP. I didn't see it so I apologize if someone already said this.

FYI Mike! unless it is an acronym, when one types with ALL CAPS, that is yelling and considered rude.
