Sounds as if you are a bit sore about your choice not to visit Australia because you know you would not get away with the same issues and problems you had in NZ. That's fine by me as long as the nasty pathogens stay out of this country.

No doubt our quarantine is tougher and more expensive than NZ.
Certainly our system is a bit touchy at present with our unwelcome smuggled boat people.

I am based in Mackay and often meet people who have entered through that port and apart from the cost I don't see any issues.

I am sure that you would have more problems in Aus than you created in NZ.

I am sure we would give you a trip back to USA when you need it and look after your food and health until you got back.

Im not sure that I trust ANY medical or ecology advice regarding pest invasion in Australia or the USA.

Both introduced external species and diseases to deal with specific local problems over the years, visa and cost free I might add, and stuffed up the ecology. Species of fish, Bufo toads, etc etc.

Even the pesticides used for 'control' have minor side effects like death or similar to humans and animals, or at the least, genetically play with species systems to give them an extra leg or testicle or something.

Im all for protecting what exists, and Australia is one heck of a beautiful country. Im just thinking the best way to protect it is to not allow scientists and Monsanto to be in charge of that job.

Meanwhile.... an observation.... based on quite a few observations..... arrive at Tulla and if you have an honest face -like me- you will just be waved through quarantine.... Auckland every single item of everyone's baggage goes through the xray machine.... no exceptions.
So who has the more secure bio border?
Handy tip... tick the 'been on a farm' box at Tulla and there is a good chance you will get your boots steam cleaned all fancy like for free....

and also... Chile puts everything single bit of inward baggage through Xray.... they have the same healthy ag status as Oz/NZ thanks to the Atacama and the Andes... buggers picked up my Branston Pickle last year... thought it may have been honey.

Used to be a good tip in Oz also way back when.

You got sent straight to AQIS thus bypassing customs and the AQIS guys were so intend in steam cleaning your boots and checking socks etc that they had no time (or interest in) in the excess of other dutiable goods.

The good old days have passed...
