General Info: SD50 Sail Drive Anode

Just ordered and received a pair of new Yanmar Anodes (196450-02490) these are to be installed when I haul out next week. I was expecting Zinc and what arrived was Aluminum. I rang the local Yanmar supplier and was told that is the only ones they sell.

Am I concerned over nothing, the kit is a Yanmar split Anode with adaptor plates with all the screws.

Sorry Paul for the slight topic change; I just had the cones lapped in my SD50s. Seemed an easy job and 3 hours for both to be done. However the expensive part was the 'Yanmar nut' replacement which was NZD100 (USD64) each!!! The nut at the top of the clutch assembly usually needs to be replaced but how can one nut cost so much? Am I being ripped off?

Traditionally, aluminum anodes are used only in fresh water. I read an article recently Zinc and Aluminum Sacrificial Anodes | Cruising World which suggests that aluminum anodes are as good if not better, when used in salt water. The trouble is, this and other articles assume that the anodes are being put on stainless drive shafts or bronze props where the aluminum anode is undoubtedly the first to go. If an aluminum anode is put on an aluminum saildrive, does it offer protection? I'm no expert, I'm just asking the question.

The aluminum "zincs" are correct for SD 50 in salt water. They have a different composition than the aluminum sail drive. While in the Bahamas found I had to replace them about every 4 months, but here in the northeast once a season is adequate.

Failure to use the correct anode material may result in inadequate protection and excessive corrosion of underwater drive system components. Use only zinc or aluminum anodes in brackish and saltwater applications. In freshwater applications, use aluminum or magnesium anodes...

April last year (2015) the nuts cost me $54.29 AUD each Part No (196324-04380).
So looks like we are all being equally ripped off.
If I remember correctly it is a left hand locking nut so not that common.

Looks like the Aluminum one is OK for saltwater so will go with that. Thanks for the reply's guys.

Use a bit of Loctite and the nuts can be reused, and if you use new nuts do not deform the locking tab to the same extent as original. This way it can be tapped out with a pin punch next time you relap.

Boatzincs.com says "aluminum" (which is an aluminum alloy) is superior to zinc in salt and brackish water.

Nigel Calder said much the same, and not to mix zinc and aluminum anodes on a boat. However, I launched before reading this, and while I used an Al anode on the sail drive hub, the pencil anode inside the sail drive is available only in zinc.

So I'm not sure what to do now.

mine had both been reused. Job done by professionals with proper tools.

Ripped off, yes, but not equally. In September last year, my local Yanmar merchant charged me $74.76 for the same nut! However the biggest rip off for Yanmar SD50 cone clutch repair is the "Collar Set" ( part# 196320-04400) which is nothing more than 3 copper washers of approx 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5mm thickness) to be used as shims to adjust end play. These little beauties cost me A$111.73.
I've found the Newcastle Yanmar agent to be much more reasonable and personable, but have also been advised to buy through Singapore.

Just looked up the Shims 196320-04400 on a EU websites they want 185.00 EURO and Nuts (196324-04380) 85.00 EURO so maybe we are in better shape than Europe. Still no excuse for it though.

Starting to look like you got a cheap pair of nuts, pardon the expression, at only A$54.29 each!

BTW, I sourced replacement anodes locally from "Anodes Online". They fitted well and are sacrificing OK.
