Hi George,

I think the bed is 160cm wide at the head and 130cm wide at the foot with the taper from half way down the bed. It’s 200cm long. Owners and guest bed are exactly the same.

Regarding solar. That sounds like Robin Marine talking rubbish!
Reasons for NOT having solar above the davits: weight (we have friends with bent davits from the weight of solar plus dinghy); access into dinghy from the aft of the boat when lifted (we store rubbish in there when offshore); they are an obstruction (especially when approaching the aft of the boat in the dinghy the panels are head height with sharp corners); sunlight (the panels will be more shaded); capacity (you will only fit 2 panels above the davits); shade (our panels are like an extension of the cockpit and offer shade and rain protection).

Basically, I see now upside to having the panels on the davits and from talking to those who have done this, I do think you’ll regret it.

Actually Dave. its worse than you think. The suggestion is to move the supports from the floor and locate them on the davits to support the 3 panels above the coachroof, like yours. I was thinking warranty issues etc

Just been informed by my agent that this idea has been shelved.

Dave,
In your last video you mention to have bought your boat out of VAT.
I am assuming this also applies to the aftermarket additions. How did that all work in practice?
Did suppliers invoice without VAT and if so what requirements did you have to comply with or did you reclaim it in some way and how did that work?
We are facing that same issue and our agent does not seem very knowledgeable.

I did the electrical install in Gibraltar where it’s tax free. Unfortunately, the items I bought in the UK I paid vat on which I could have claimed back when I departed mainland EU but I never bothered.

Mustang, while more expensive, are USCG.
Plenty of brand, but if you go for the best with Spinlock for you, what will the crew be thinking !!?

Can I offer a small piece of advice:

Now is the time to buy half a dozen of all the consumables: filters, impellers etc that you’ll need.

They are all so much cheaper in the UK than once you’re afloat and spending ages going around chandlers to find them.

I’d buy at least 6x of for both engines and generator:
Fuel filters (more primary than secondary)
Oil filters
Impellers
Anodes
Filters for water maker.

Life jackets: if I had my time again I’d have bought 6x Spinlock 170’s from the start and fitted all with PLB1’s. Expensive but you’ll want the best when you cross an ocean.

I’d look at buying everything with one chandler in the UK and ask for a discount then ship to France yourself. We did this and had great fun!

I love shopping in chandlers. Enjoy!

Hum, not sure, you may double check that.
Unless you meant the new deck vest Lite, which indeed is.
But the one I believe we were implicitly talking about was the 5D which isn't .
At the end, doesn't matter much, even with the mustang apparently, they are class V and seems you have to wear them or have a set of class I red-foam ugly jacket somewhere!

I have settled for the SPINLOCK DECKVEST 5D PRO SENSOR 170N with BALISE S20 SMARTFIND AIS devices.

With reference the approval of life jackets and other safety equipment for pleasure craft.

Is it not the country where your boat is registered that sets the compliance standard for onboard safety equipment?

That is an interesting question. As far as I can see when in US waters a foreign flag vessel that is temporarily in the state or federal waters the equipment of the vessel is regulated by the Flag state of the vessel, with the exception of pollution control (i.e. holding tanks etc). The individual port authorities with control over internal water ways may technically have some say over equipment but it seems in practice this is not followed through for temporary foreign flagged vessels, I am not sure there is a law saying they do not have the right, so I would not want to be contesting it in a US court.

I had planned to do this, but until we're on the boat, I wasn't sure how I'd work out the correct parts for our two Yanmar 54Hp engines and Cummings ONAN 11Kva genset.

I'm flying to Alicante on Valentines Day to see the boat, but if anyone can give some tips on part numbers and where to order them, that would be brilliant.

Our water maker is a Dessalator DC Freedom 100, so I should presumably contact them for spares?
