congrats Sidetracks and here's my 2 penny's worth which i hope can help.

3. What are the best solar panels and number required to meet our daily needs
(we will have all the electric comforts of home onboard) 3x 335w has been enough for us so far with the lagoon 840ah batteries

4. Gel batteries v Lithium (3 Gel 140apm + 2nd 40Amp charger on Lagoon list)
( Electrical circuit with 60 Amp charger on Lagoon list) Lithium wasn't an option for me at time of purchase but i plan to add it when i've killed my lead acids

5. Onan Genset 11kva 220V / 50hz + COCOON or a smaller one that will run Air/Con while the Solar will take care of most of the other requirements. our 6.5kva cannot run the water maker, heat the hot water and power an iron at the same time but it will be very quiet at night if we add AC in the future. it's all a balance / sacrifice

6. B&G ZEUS3 12’’ display at Helm Stn should I put one at the Nav Stn ? (set up as a slave) we have an iPad Pro which does everything except control the auto pilot and has the benefit of going anywhere on the boat. don't forget each display will require a different chart subscription at full cost. At least with iPad they are only $50ish per large chart and i very rarely sit at the nav desk

7. Fridges. Someone mentioned the noise of fridges running all night. Is this an issue on L450 ? I agree with Dave’s comments about the cockpit fridge size (36L) and location.( list price €1,550 ex vat) we cannot hear the fridges. 1 fridge isn't enough for live aboard imo. we could do with more chilled space.

8. Downwind shorthand sailing CODE 0 + RIG AND POLE. (€19,650 ex VAT)
or PARASAIL v PARASAILOR ( we are planning to do long ocean passages) get the Lagoon spinnaker package and then buy a wingaker. this is my most recent thoughts on this but i am by no means an expert in this area

Look forward to reading your replies

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Hi

Thank you PW for your detailed reply to my list, much appreciated and helpful.

Hi Tuskie. We plan to sail in the med then head to the Caribbean and then onwards. No time limit. This will means spending long periods away from shore power.

No choice on the matter of a/c or no a/c

I will cross check through my agent what Lagoon has to offer as options and compare with the open market. I will check all related posts on each of the items listed and all going well will meet my deadline at the end of Oct and update then.

Thanks again guys

regards
George

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Hi Dave

Sorry I did not check the thread before my last post.

Thank you, for replying to our list and taking the time to share your views and experience with the equipment onboard your new 450S .

Since we started our research about 2 weeks ago. It was great to read your posts and get an insight into the Lagoon buying/delivery process. We too, are now at the start of that journey and after an emotional rollercoaster of a ride. We hope, as best we can, have a home (450S) away from home. That will take us near and far.

Watch this space

Regards
George

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Well I can honestly say that from the limited amount of experience we have and the last 3 months living on board that we wouldn't change a thing. I think your 450s will be perfect for you and you'll be as happy as we are.

We gave up an amazing life and a beautiful apartment in Dubai in search of the dream and love it. Yes, cruising is 'fixing things in beautiful places' but i'm a tinkerer so i even love that.

Your 450 is a great starting platform and with a few improvements will be a lovely home away from home. I'm not onboard right now (which is why i have the time to post on here) and i miss waking up, heading into the saloon and seeing the 360 degree view of whatever bay we may be in. I can't wait to get home. Incidentally, home this week is Monaco!

After 4 months of initial Cruising in the Aegean, I have to say this is one of the best bits.

Home this week is {insert bay or town of your choice}....

Last 4 days we've basically passaged down from the Northern Sporades to the Dodecanese daysailing, Just the 2 of us, plus both cats sitting on the Flybridge for the day, watching the world go by.

Loving the 450 as home. Few technical issues, few things keep not working quite right, (This week its the autopilot ) but hey, thats cruising. The winter work list is growing....

Mark.

The 450 is a great choice.

Slightly of the subject .but when replacing parts for the auto pilot you must recheck the travel port and starboard on the steering linkage so the ram doesnt push against ther rudder stops as this will break off the rudder linkage pin on the port side .the set up is done in the auto pilot screen

Hi Mark

Thanks for the reply.

I have been reading the 450 posts over the last few days and taken it all in.
I will have a look at 450 Mods post, thanks.

I am waiting for a reply from my agent with reference to my list and will take you up on your offer to contact you direct if needed.

We spent a week on a monohull sailing out of Gocek a favourite sailing ground of Michael BuerK.

Gocek Bay is very nice. We bought our boat in Fethyie and the survey was done in Gocek, and I really quite liked it. (did NOT like the prices at Ece Marina however !) The fish market surrounded by restaurants is awesome there.

Happy to help and share. We're only 6 months into this now, but loving it !.

Regards

Mark.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Is anyone crossing the Atlantic with the ARC this year?

I've signed us up and as long as I can get to work and back again before November 19th, we're on it!

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

There is at least one more 450 on the Arc, I believe Cabana is doing it this year.

You can see who's on it here: https://www.worldcruising.com/arc/ar...ntentries.aspx

We considered it, but then decided we needed to spend more time in the med for sure.
That, and I'll be in Antarctica in November.

Considering the Odessey in Jan 2019

Mark.

[QUOTE=davedindubai;2488702]Is anyone crossing the Atlantic with the ARC this year?

We've put our names down for next year's ARC, but are now wavering on the idea.

A couple of people I've spoken to suggested the problem with the ARC is that you have to leave on a set date, whatever the weather. Last year the fleet was becalmed, the year before they had really bad weather.

We love the idea of the party at either end, safety in numbers and a guarateed berth in Las Palmas and Saint Lucia.

However, the whole point of joining the ARC was to reassure my wife and children who have not done an ocean passage before, and heading out into a storm rather than waiting a few days for the weather to clear will not be very reassuring!

What do others think?

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Hi All

Below is my first attempt after reading most, if not all the posts on the subject of solar and generators.

As, I am a complete novice on Electrical equipment and generator selection. I would appreciate your help to refine this list and correct any errors.

As live aboards we have selected all the mod cons including electric winches and plan to be on the hook as much as possible.

When I install 6 of the new Sunpower X22 360w panels using 3 gel batteries.
What can be used below marked “A” and what will become redundant. List “B” is what I can remove from the Lagoon options list and redirect the funds toward the Solar/battery/genset project.

A
Lagoons List
Comfort Equipment
3 additional service batteries 140Amp + 2nd 40Amp charger
Electrical circuit with 60 Amp Battery Charger
Battery controler
B
Options
Inverter 12/220-2000 VA
Gel Batteries in Lieu of Acid Batteries
Onan Genset 11 Kva 220v /50Hz

My objective is to run all the domestic appliances off Solar/battery and the water maker 100L/H and A/C 4800 BTU 220v to run off the factory fitted Genset 11Kva 220v/50Hz or ideally a smaller one.

6 Supower X22 360w panels
Victron Quatro. Model ? (Gel + Lithium)
Victron MPPT Model ?
Victron BMS Colour display Model ?

Unfortunately we have to stick with gel batteries. But will replace with lithium battery bank LiFePo4

Question

What size genset would I need to run the water maker and A/C if my other demands were met by solar and gel batteries.
How many gel batteries should I have 3 or ?

Mark. Great post on refurbishing your 450. We are in Alanya for the next 5 weeks, unfortunately not sailing. But enjoying it.

Thank you in advance for your help.

George

I won't be leaving in a storm and don't care how many other boats would. I'll go when I'm ready regardless of the rally.

I'll be catching boats up anyway [emoji6].

I'm not sure if you're going for Lithium in near future it's worth paying extra for gel now. Just get the 6x lagoon lead acid batteries. These are good enough for all of our daily requirements.

With hindsight, I might have gone for the Onan 11kva. It's a tough decision and mine was driven by cost. 6.5kva will run water maker, bulk charge AND boil a kettle at the same time. It would do this AND run AC tho. Don't forget if the genset is running it will take over powering of everything. Our max generator AC load is similar to our max inverter load which keeps things simple. I can shut down the genset at any point without loss of power to anything.

Forget the 2kva lagoon inverter. Get the biggest one you can afford. It's a real luxury to be able to boil the kettle, make toast and iron a shirt at the same time. All without using diesel or disturbing people asleep. We love our 5kva. We can run the water maker from the inverter but as it produces 110l per hour I tend to end up running it when the engines are on and making noise anyway.

I put some electrical drawings on here earlier which may help in layman terms. I'm no electrician tho and they are not perfect but might give you an idea.

All in all, you want a system that's simple and fuss free. You don't want to have to turn off the AC to make water etc. what you've spec'd so far looks good.
