It appears that you have the wrong version of the BSB4 PlugIn.
For OpenCPN 4.0.0, you should use this one:

Please double check that and let us know how it goes.

Good Luck

The link you cite here leads me to the same BsB4 download page where I got a bsb4 plugin that doesn't work: bsb4_pi.dll. I assume that the bsb4 plugin you cite did work. These posts, I realize, are more than a year old, so I wonder what happened meanwhile; I can't find a source for bsb4_win32_pi15_v12_pi.d. Any ideas? (Provided I am lucky enough for you to see this old reply.

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Dave: Further to my post yesterday (#16), I verified that the wrong bsb4 plugin apparently is bsb4 -pi.dll, which is what I downloaded. What's more, in opencpn's User Manual on bsb4 is cited as follows: "... it will be up to you to ensure that the BSB4 plugin bsb4_pi.dll (my emphasis) appears in the correct folder ...". Well, in appears in the correct folder on my box, but is it the correct plugin? Not according to you, (one year ago), I take it. I am still trying to find bsb4_win32_pi15_v12_pi.dll. Where is it? Any idea?

Jake...

The opencpn.org website contains the most modern Plugin links.

Try this:

https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/plugins/bsb4.html

Good luck

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Hi, Dave: That link leads to the opencpn BSB4 plugin download page, which gives an install file to download, which installs bsb4_pi.dll, which I understand doesn't work - at least not for me. Is that not the file you told Jim is the wrong version? That's what he had according to his log, and what I have according to mine. So my question is, what does jim have now, which worked for him like "magic", and how did he get it? Which I guess I should ask him.
My take on this is that opencpn screwed up somewhere and is publishing the wrong file to download. The problem is, I can't find anyone there to ask about this. Do you? (OCPN say their contact information is not for technical questions.) Sorry if I am wasting your time with all this, but I am hung.

Jake

PS: I am totally dependent on this plugin; I sail in Canada, North Channel, and bsb4 is all we have for charts.

Jake...

Let's start from the top, again.

You have come to the right place. This is the main tech support Forum for OCPN. I am the Dev Lead on OpenCPN. I wrote the BSB4 Plugin. I can help you.

Please post a logfile showing OCPN's attempt to load the BSB4 Plugin, whichever one you have.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Jake...

OK, you have the correct version of bsb4_pi.dll (104) for your OCPN 4.6.1.

Have you enabled the Plugin? And then rebuilt chart database?

Do that, and send a log if there are problems.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

OK, Dave: I managed a chart - but not a Canadian chart. For the first time, after activating the plug-in and rebuilding the database I got chart outlines - but only US chart outlines. The log reveals clearly initializing a 14 ..... chart. So the bsb4 charts are not coming through. All these charts are in a single folder, as you can see from the log.

However, meanwhile I am getting other problems that are not related to opencpn. Just for your information, I am running OPCPN under Wine on a linux distro. It runs OCPN alright, but I am having problems with losing the video. (This started mysteriously just this morning.) I definitely can not have this happening underway, so I'll try and fix this first. I'll get back to you later when it's fixed. Meanwhile, thanks for your assistance, which apparently got me a small step ahead.

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Hi, Dave: I think I got a stable platform now. As before, I get US charts, but not the Canadian BSB4 ones. Enabled the plugin. Full database rebuild. I attach the log for this.
All I can tell is that there are BSB4 issues there, but I haven't the expertise to recognize what it is. Maybe You can make sense out of this. I think I am getting close, but there is still something missing (obviously). (At least I do not lose the screen anymore.)

Jake

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Jacob, just a thought here. Have you added your path to the BSB chart directory?
I think you should see that in the file uploaded.

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...hart_files_tab

Make sure it is listed in the Options> Charts > Chart Files Tab
Then do a full database rebuild as Dave suggested.

Perhaps these are the paths?
Quote:
3:08:42 PM: Starting chart database Update...
3:08:42 PM: No change detected on directory Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405
3:08:42 PM: No change detected on directory Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003406
3:08:42 PM: No change detected on directory Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003407
3:08:42 PM: Finished chart database Update

From your file this is good, you updated rebuilt db.

Quote:
7:53:30 PM: Starting chart database Update...
7:53:30 PM: Searching directory: Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405 for *.kap
7:53:30 PM: Searching directory: Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405 for *.geo
7:53:30 PM: Searching directory: Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405 for *.000
7:53:30 PM: Searching directory: Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405 for *.s57
7:53:30 PM: Searching directory: Z:\mnt\sda1\ChartKit\Encryption\00003405 for 00300000.a
Now make sure you have a good path to your Chart files in the CHART FILE TAB
Then rebuild the DB again.

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Hi, rgleason: Yes, I did all that. The path is what I got by way of the browser. The program can find the US charts all right; it just can't decrypt the Canadian charts, which are in the same file, BSBChart. Thanks for the response.

Jacob....

Let me just confirm a few things...

1. You are running OpenCPN with Wine on linux? Never been tried for BSB4, AFAIK.

2. You have registered your BSB4 charts with the proper keys, gotten from the issuer?

Thanks

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Hi, Dave: Answer is 'yes' to both questions.
If BSB4 can't run under Wine I am screwed. But maybe I am the first to try it.
Does the log jakeocpnlog0606.doc offer any clues as to why BSB4 "Could not find ChartKit directories" and "BSB4_PI: Failed to load decryptor dll specified by certificate : 00003405.CET"?
Meanwhile, I will post a new thread "Has anyone run Canadian BSB4 charts on opcpn in Linux under Wine?"
My only other chnace is if somebody writes BSB4 PL for Linux. Otherwise I'll have to go back to Fugawi, which until last year I have run under a left-over, expired Windows XP, which has since given the ghost. Oh well.

Jake

P.S. I know the North Channel of Lake Huron well enough by now that I do not often need a navigation program to sail there, but my wife does not agree.

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

Hi, Dave: I installed Fugawi under Wine (which it wouldn't a few years ago). The end result is identical, it seems, to that with ocpn; fugawi loads all the US charts, but not the BSB4 charts, which it does when running on Windows. This seems to indicate that Wine isn't friendly to BBS4, even when the capability to accomodate BSB4 charts is already built into the program. The key to this, it seems to me, is those HKEY Chartkey directories the program can't find. I'll stop right there because I am now way out of my depth.
Just thought I let you know what I found; I am beginning to fear you are right - that the BSB4 plugin may not work in Wine (there's lots of stuff that won't work in Wine). I'd appreciate anything further you can contribute.

Re: Using Canadian Hydrographic Office charts with OpenCPN

CHS charts are now BSB3... no encryption.

Also, the statement that these charts haven't seen many updates is definitely wrong. At least here on the Pacific, there are new charts, revised charts (eg metres instead of fathoms) and many many corrections (such as newfound rocks!)
