All works fine..

6. (Optional)
$sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-swx11
This gives you OpenGL support with a Software rasterizer.
There is not much speed improvement in OpenCPN with the software rasterizer.
This works but very slow, a few frames per sec at best.
Without the library libgl1-mesa-swx11 installed turning on opengl results in a white screen with no FPS displayed in the menu bar.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

The Raspberry Pi 2 as a server. Just tried the Raspberry 2 as a standalone server. Running Raspian with the Open Plotter add ons. It is amazing how good this works.

You can now receive the nmea/ais streams wireless or via network on every other computer, smartphone etc. etc. Put instruments via SignalK in the browser on your screen. However SignalK is work in progress, but is works. Waiting for more instruments.

Raspberry PI 2 server acts as a multiplexer, streaming NMEA/AIS output and works as a SignalK server. Everything you need in this small standalone box.

Here example of Windows7.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Hi,

does anyone use the pi and OC via a remote control? I use the pi for running OC on it and then over a wlan I get control with remote control and a tablet.
All is as good as I want but one small problem still left.
Dimming the screen for night use.
I use self scanned rastercharts and so the night Icon does not work.
With the function keys there is also no dimming function.
I installed xcalib without any effect.
Sugestions?

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Is it time to go ahead with this ?
Or will the solution for the RPi be the new video driver ?

Cheers,

New driver here!!!!!

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/ano...pbian-release/

Just installed, OpenCPN noticeably faster, but I'm still getting just 4 - 6fps zooming panning. Glxgears showing 60fps.

Any tweaks to speed it up some more? Running OpenCPN4.2 on an Openplotter image.

Great news though.

Edit - the display was a bit unstable, so after checking the voltage at the Pi itself which was low, I cranked up the power supply a bit and performance is much better. Even though it's still just showing 5 or 6fps it's very usable - BIG improvement

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Good aftermnoon Dave,

changing the setting to Opengl locks up my present version.

After removing the OpenCpn folder to make a new start it worked.

Here is the outcome of the bare version without using any maps or settings:

It seems remarkable fast.

It works after removing the OpenCPN folder. Then I start O in bare settings.

Switching on OpenGl without caching. It still seems to work.

But after a reboot. The program starts to load and is then kicked out by the OS as before.

I have tried several settings with the GPU memory but that does not help either.

But without the OpenGL setting on, it works faster and there no longer mentioning of software rendering.

It is certainly an improvement with these new settings. But with the OpenGL
something goes wrong. Is it a memory problem ?

Bram

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

It appears that you have to do more for upgrading to OpenGL:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install raspi-gpio

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr libgl1-mesa-dri

sudo rpi-update

sudo raspi-config

With raspi-config you can in the advanced setting activate the experimental Opengl driver.

Then reboot and you a have Turbo-charged Raspberry Pi 2.

At first my monitor switched off. But by changing some HDMI parameter in the config.txt.

It is working now supercharged.

Bram

I will give the outcome of the log file, after trying some other settings.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Can some one tell me how to upgrade to 4.2? I have 4.0 and when I use Add/Remove software (source trusty) from the GUI I can only see ver 4.0.0-0 available to download ?
Thx
Steve
