Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

This is one of the reasons I wrote
FS#1150 : GPS Windows 8 Sensor - Integrate into Opencpn

I just don't understand why people haven't voted for it!
Maybe it should be augmented with these links, but this stuff is in the User Manual too... I just don't think Phil23 should be banging his head installing GPS that should work.

Very early on Petr Šimon wrote a GNSS driver which can be used.
I guess I have always wondered why haven't we incorporated this driver into the program somehow.

And if all else fails check out this page in the User Manual. Sorry it has been so painful.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Geez Phil, you are posting in another thread too! How will we keep up with this?

Have you cut the wires and are doing something entirely different now?
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...pn-164959.html
"My request for help this time is as follows: NMEA cable exiting Unit has screen, orange, green, blue and yellow wires I have a cable I have cut off a BU353 with screen, red, black, white and green does anyone have any idea which to which to try "

Down below you state
"a BU353-S4 installed and functioning perfectly producing data."

...Ok, cool down, it is clearly some driver or setup problem. Can you give us more information as BCN asked? Screenshots attached here, etc?

Forget connection your Lowrance for the moment. AND JUST post in this thread please.

And just to confirm, you are using
OS: Windows 10
OpenCPN Version: ???
GPS Hardware: BU353-S4 with a usb connector
Globalsat Device Drivers: You said there were none. (they get downloaded when the hardware is found)
Have you or someone else ever had another GPS plugged into this machine? ???

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

I get the feeling we are making simple things difficult by default. (?)

BT GPS does not work.
Why not try a WiFi one?

Dedicated tablet ...
Without GPS sensor? Windows?

GPS sensor does not work.
Windows?

My BU does not work.
8.1? 10? Windows.

3/4 Windows down.

Get a tablet with a gps in it, if you want 'dedication'. Mobile stands for mobile. Wireless stands for wireless.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

While I have been using openCPN on other laptops for some years with out problems I guess my advancing years and lack of computer skills (monkey see monkey do my teacher) have caught me out this time. I do not know how to down load screen shots to this message however will have one last shot by trying to provide the data in script.

I really trust the above information will be adequate to resolve my problem as it is driving me to distraction.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

For uploading or attaching files use the "clip":
click on it and it will open a secondary window where you select the file(s) to upload, then there is another button to actually upload the files and voila those are going to be attached to your post.

In case a log file is too long or the forum system tells you that the file format is not accepted, just change the file type to .doc (the ocpn log file for example)

Prolific devices are known to be buggy.
Carefully read and follow this link to make them run with Windows:

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Let's try another thing:

From Windows get The Process Explorer:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...rnals/bb896653
Download, unzip and run it.

You will see something like the first screenshot below.
Now use Find from the Process Explorer Tool Bar and enter "Serial", go.
We shall see then which serial ports are in use and which process owns them.
Your COM3 shall appear as Serial2

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Phil,

Your screen shots show OpenCPN and GPSInfo running at the same time. OpenCPN will not get data from the GPS if another program is capturing that data. How about screen shots of the OpenCPN Settings/Connections screens without GPSInfo running.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Fabbian,

good eye! Should have seen this...

The Process Explorer should bring up cases where a process does not release the port correctly when exiting or such nice things as background processes or daemons kidnapping a COM port.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

Unfortunately screenshot of CONNECTIONS without GPS running will not upload to screen for some reason but is exactly the same as the screen shot above with regards to content.

Re: Open Cpn can't see GPS

When you mount the puck in tools/communications, are you picking the comm with Prolific usb to serial? On my pc it's com3.

I also reloaded Win 7 after Win 10. Thinking about Ubuntu since Win 11 will only be worse.
