Okay so the charts are encrypted. So what. I have no problem paying for things. I have a problem with not being able to use what I pay for the way I want to use it.

From a technical perspective using encrypted charts will be easy, it is just code. The issue is political/business. Has anyone reached out to the copyright owners to try to get an idea of what it would take to get/write a binary library?

This would not be the best solution as it is not completely open but it would at least work.

Hi All,

As I have said previously in an other post, thanks a lot to Dave and the other developpers for Opencpn.
I have used it, basically, for months and it is a great job.
But there are some points which are very unconfortable and irritant in navigation. Some of us have said the same thing in the past :

1 - We need the posting on the routes of the course and length of each segment without having to pass by the properties. When you sail and that the conditions are difficult it is much more safe thus. In the properties, if you have two segments of similar length and little difference in the course, you need one moment of reflection to know which one you are looking for and there is a strong risk of error which does not exist if this information is posted directly on the routes (best solution) or when the cursor passes over the concerned segment.
It is the most tedious point.

2 - I don't find anything to export and save marks. May be I don't know how to do. But if there is the possibility of puting Marks, which is a good thing, there should be the possibilty to save them, otherwise it is no use.

Afterward we could ask for a lot of new features, and I will be glad to use some of them. But to navigate, what is the main reason for being of Opencpn, it is almost prefect : simple and effective.
No need to make "une usine à gaz" as we say in french (sorry, I have not the translation for that).

Glad to hear your comments again!

1. Route segment lengths and courses. I will investigate this. Should be not too difficult.

2. Marks placed by right-click "Drop Mark Here" are automatically saved by opencpn for later use.

They can also be exported or imported as GPX files using the "GPX Out" icon in the toolbar. You need to first enable the GPX icons in Toolbox->Etc.

3. Regarding the slow start of Toolbar: Very odd. Any further information on the situation when this happens?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

For the settings, yes, that what I have done a few months ago and I have saved all my routes and tracks like that. But I don't find the way to do the same with marks, there is no "Export..." in the menu for the marks. And even if they are saved by Opencpn, I don't where and I cannot export my marks to an other computer.
That what I wanted to say in my previous post. Excuse me if I was not clear enough (Ah, if everybody was speaking french...).

For the problem with the Toolbox, I don't see anything special to say about it, except it is annoying. Sometimes after closing the box, Opencpn crashes, but I don't remember the circumstances. I will pay attention to that and tell you.

And thanks for trying something about routes.

They are exported in GPX format, GE understands those.. Give it a try.

Scale up and down buttons

Request:
Remove (or at least disable) the scale up and down buttons from the toolbar if there are only CM93 charts present.
They are only irritating the user. Removing them will also keep the GUI clear and tidy.

And as of the new version with quilting feature, aren't these buttons also obsolete when quilting is enabled? If so, let them disappear from the toolbar, too.

GRIB Edition 1 + 2

I do believe that the GRIB Edition 2 format becomes more and more important. The BSH e.g. will only offer GRIB 2 format in the near future.

Therefore I vote for adding GRIB 2 support in OCPN.

AFAIK the actual GRIB support is be done by zyGrib. Sadly the zyGrib developer seems not be interested in adding GRIB 2 support to the program.

So it has to be done on our own for OCPN.

Here is a link to a PDF document describing the differences between the 2 formats (on page 3): http://www.wmo.ch/pages/prog//www/WM...RIB1-GRIB2.pdf

It would be an extremely helpful feature.

Diagonal chart scrolling at the corners

As the title already implies should there be the possibility to move the chart diagonal (by the green arrows at the border of the chart window) when the cursor comes close to one of the corners.

Zoom center position

In my opinion it would be more intuitive if the zooming by the mousewheel will center to the actual centered position instead of the cursor position.

As long as a position on the map can be centered by a single mouseclick this is the much better solution (at least in my opinion).

Route Manager

The Route Manager also becomes better and better.
But there are still some things to improve ...

  • Visual difference between Routes and Tracks
and perhaps the possibility to show only one type or both
  • Sortorder
Clicking on the field "Route Name" should toggle the sortorder
  • Default naming of Tracks
Actually the Tracks are shown as "Active Track" and "Unnamed Track".
They should be named by the time stamp as default.
  • Default naming of imported Routes/ Tracks
If they have no name they should be named by their file name as default.
  • Deletion of Tracks/Routes
There should be the possibility to delete all Routes/ Tracks (as is) but without the active one.

route manager

I would like to add some points more
  • Invisible status for tracks should be saved in navobj file
  • Active route should be highlighted (and off course active track)
  • start point and end point should be saved in navobj and gpx files
regards

Hi Gunther
I think you have the behavior you expect in your post #370 by disabling Wheel-zoom-to-cursor in tool box/etc.
regards

I do not understand this one:

  • Active route should be highlighted (and off course active track)
I think it already is, at least for me, when the route is active. It is drawn in red.

You are so right ...!
I normally have this option always disabled and didn't check it back. So I thought this is the new default behaviour - sorry for that and forget about this point.

Maybe he means in the Route Manager (and not in the chart) - just a guess.
