Tapping, Knocking Sound from bottom of Hull

I have my sailboat moored at Boca Chica in Panama. I was down to the boat today and was alarmed to hear tapping sounds coming from different parts of the bottom hull. It went for some time, every minute or two, at different, random areas of the hull.

I could not find any reasonable explanation for the sounds.

Could this be marine life from below? Has anyone heard such a thing? Anything to be concerned about?

Thanks!

John

Most probably--I have experienced it before.

In our area that would be breeding carp. Perhaps some local fish spawning? They like bottom growth.

Quite right. They will just help themselves to your stock of beef jerky and sweets and then leave without so much as a good bye or thank you.

Every time I clean our bottom I'm amazed at the sea life. Had dolphins 80' away, they were squeaking in my ears for half an hour, just yesterday.

welcome to cf.

i have that here in tropical mexico occasionally---when the blowfish feed off the bottom of my boat--they eat shellfish--barnies and oysters that live under your hull.....so do snapper and some other fishies--is an alarming sound initially, but it is the sound of bottom cleaning by nature. crabs will also sit on your hull and feed....

more entertaining than cable tv.....

Re: Tapping, Knocking Sound from bottom of Hull

I had a similar experience with turtles, on the Okeechobee near Turkey Creek. Very loud bangs on the bottom of my steel hull. It seems they were letting me know they wanted to be fed. They would swim under the boat, inflate an air sac (?) and rise rapidly to bounce off the bottom of the hull. Then they would come to the surface off the port side, look me square in the eye, and waggle their little front claws in front of their faces until I threw something for them to eat. - real cute!

Obviously is a Sea Dragon asking to come in. By the sounds of it a F'ing big one. I'd block the thru hull fittings are they can slide their slimy tails up them and grab you in bed and ram you down a sink hole. It's not a pretty sight seeing a galley full of blood, ooze and brain matter. Worse for the person who has to clean it up.

You could try fishing for the Sea Dragon with OO hooks and a bit of bread. They like a touch Tabasco.

I am disappointed .... Nobody knew that this a Raven fish?

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore –

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my hull....
