Depending on where you are going: Solar is great in Mexico, Wind is better in the Pacific (overcast most of the time until you get to Hawaii)

Do others go out and get them? If so why do they need the oars?

Just asking

Unfortunately, dinghies drift off with people in them all the time. I personally do not think dependence on someone rescuing you is a good substitute for proper preparation. Even if not life threatening, motors die often enough that I have rescued quite a few folks with non-functioning engines.

Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

Mast Electrical Components - No more: maintenance aloft, noisy wires or leaky deck penetrations.
Underwater Thru Hull - Replaced with welded in standpipe and ball valve above water line.
Exterior Wood - Starboard for seating area and other small places where metal is inappropriate.
Bolted Chaniplates - Replaced with welded on type.
Deadeyes and Lanyards - Cool looking but a pain to make adjustments. Replaced with oversize (1 inch) industrial galvanized.
SSB and Sextant - Not going offshore.
Built in Stereo and Speakers - Use portable.
Sea Water To Galley Sink - One less "boat sinker"

Thus far people have thrown off everything.

So that's easy.... Just buy a boat and go. Just like we have been saying for decades.

Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

- Hot water heater
- Pressurized water pump
- All AC wiring and outlets
- depth transducer thru-hull (went with in-hull)
- Speed transducer thru hull (use GPS)
- Holding tank, hoses and discharge thru-hull
- Jabsco toilet and sea-water intake thru-hull (installing a Nature's Head)
- Head sink and thru-hull
- Steering pedestal (went tiller style)
- Auto pilot (installed a Hydrovane - might get a tiller pilot)
- SS rigging (splicing Dux instead)
- Roller furler (hanks only)
- Honda 2000

....I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure there's more.

The RatRace is messing with my mind, and its only been 3 years. Time to go now, simple and cheap.

Chart Plotter... for better or worse I couldn't man the tiller and plot a course at the same time.

We are planning to toss:
- Genset
- Air conditioner
- Dive compressor
- Water heater
- Wind generator (probably)

And add:
- Windvane
- Series drogue
- Light air sail
- Solar panels
- HAM Radio
- A whole lot of safety details (fire extinguishers, manual bilge pumps (there's none now!), and etc)

But these choices are very specific to our style and situation. The overall goal is to have more time to focus on traveling with the kids, by setting ourselves up with a simpler boat that is less demanding to maintain. If it was just my wife and I, we'd have more free time and be much more willing to maintain a more complex boat.

might like a few of those rejects.

When I got my boat, I got rid of Bees, Honeycomb/wax, and their little dead bodies.

about 8 pm the wife turns up with a big bag of stuff and an excited look on her face........"look what i found on the free table!!!!!!",i took it all back the next day!

another time there was a charter boat in who had just done all their laundry ie fitted sheets, embroided towels, pillowcases etc and left the lot on the free table(otherwise unmarked as) and gone for a shower to find the whole lot gone when they returned
Had a good chuckle at this post.

The iron that came with our boat was the first thing tossed.

Haven't used one in six years

Re: things you've tossed off the boat that others think are necessary

engine
microwave
head
alcohol stove (wood > alcohol)
half the thru holes (glassed over)
danforth anchor
stainless rigging and chainplates (now it's dux and bronze)

Then all the stuff that I've destroyed on accident because of sea water:
laptop computer
inverter (x3)
electric bilge pump (x2)
electric autopilot

added:
550 watts of solar
sculling oar
wood stove
plants: 10 tomato, 6 beets, 7 rockets 23 onions 12 garlics, 5 sunflowers, a leek and a chia (plus the herbs)
no more piss overboard instead it can fertilize plants.

Then I found some praying mantises appear in their new found habitat which I can feed flies to.
