Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Unusual suggestion from the GGR team. Anyone feel like going to get Gregor’s boat back to him?

#HankOnTheWater? I’ll crew for ya! :^)

Interesting, it dosent sound like it was broken in anyway. They do steer differently from an autopilot and they take some fine tuning, playing around with ratio knob and vane angle height etc.

reads like a bit of 'justification'.......

Meanwhile... I think half the cause of all those dismastings has been that they have all 'sailed the line' ..ie tried to hug those 'southern limits' ... rather than 'sailing the weather'.....

If you look at Suhaili's position on this day 50 years ago RKJ wasn't sailing the line... he was probably doing the full 1020....

Don does make the relevant point that the problems and retirements from other ocean events are similar, ie

History makes this very clear . Last year’s OSTAR solo transatlantic race saw FIVE finishers from 15 starters. The early Vendee Globe races saw on average only HALF the fleet finish. In 1996-97 only SIX of 16 starters finished and in the 2008-9 Vendee Globe 18 of the 29 starters FAILED TO FINISH. The retirement statistics of problems (3 keels, 3 steering and 7 mast issues) make interesting reading.

Agree, I believe for the next race they are considering rounding marks rather than a line, so the yachts will be able to manover more.

Concur! Just a stupid line in the water
Something like at one point crossing the Pacific must go above 40 latitude between Fiji and Eastern island? That should give plenty of leeway for routing.

Should be like the original.. Choose any route as long as you pass S of the great Capes..

Yes, he is out of the variables. Just let us hope his mast holds together for the stretch home. He sailed a great race. Had obviously good weather routing also, hardly did make a bad routing decision.

Since that appeared on facebook every man and its dog that have a boat wants to do that. Actually there are a few boats floating around to pick from. Which one is the most desirable or prestigious to bring ashore or which one is closest?

If I am going, will invite you to come along, however some say other boat(s) might be on their way already, although doubt that very much. Hehehe, there might more rescues to come.

Fuel and water tanks are full, just have to bring some more cans of baked beans on board......
